Move Win XP Pro copy to D-drive, make raid, install Vista and use dual boot

Postby kenzoo » Thu Mar 15, 2007 6:13 pm

Hi

At the moment i have functional Windows Xp Pro on my hardrive, i Want to move it to the D-drive because the harddrive i am using as "C" is needed for Raid in Vista.

I don't have the Vista install at the moment, I want to make the copy work in Windows Xp Pro envioment.

How do i get a dual boot for Windows Xp Pro on the "D" and a Windows Xp Pro on "C" so I can se it

Hi and welcome to PROnetworks! Glad to have you here; looks like you want quite a bit there....... It will be easier for you to do the XP setup first, before installing Vista, so keep that in mind. For "MOVING" XP to another drive, be careful with that, as the boot.ini file points to where XP 'Logically' is located, so if you plan to image your current XP setup, be aware of the Boot.ini issue, as you'll likely have to edit this file to properly point to your new XP location. After you get a successful XP setup, it's just a matter of preparing for Vista, and in your case, you'll need to get SATA/RAID drivers just in case Vista does not have them included. Enjoy the site!

What you can do is:
1. Ghost your XP PRO
2. Format drives
3. Start a new Windows XP Pro setup and install on NON Raid drive. Do not activate. Setup your RAID Drives as D: and setup your RAID. Format the RAID with XP Pro
4. Once you have this accomplish then run Ghost and restore you XP Pro to that drive you just setup Pro on. This will now be your C: drive.
5. Boot to Vista DVD and run advanced setup to install Vista on your RAID drives. Once accomplished you will then be able to dual boot and Vista will rename the drives as C:(Vista) and D:(XP Pro).

If you boot into XP PRo, XP will see the XP drive as C: and Vista as D:
If you boot into Vista, Vista will see the Vista drive as C: and XP as D:
Do NOT confuse the drive letters. Just let the OS handle the drive letters.

Beware. If you are running RAID 0, I am not sure how Ghost will handle this imaging procedure.

I hope you understand what can be accomplished.

I've used GhostCast server and it was set up on an XP on RAID-1........ the images weren't affected by any of the RAID to my knowledge, as we pulled the images off the RAID array (Just a single partition) and loaded them onto varying HDD sizes (Notebooks and laptops)
