MS: Linux Security Is A Myth

Postby Neuromancer » Sun Jan 30, 2005 7:49 pm

Yeah I just feel that MS deserves some defense since the popular thing seems to just bash MS out of hand. With very little real information to back it up. Seems kind of silly that Linux users would complaing that MS is advertising that they are better the nLinux, when Linux users have been postinghtat for years LOL

Nothing wrong with picking your flavor and enjoying it.

As for the Whole DNS server Akamai thing, obviously someone missed the point of having 15,000 Linux server over a few windows servers. DOS attacks are not restricted to any OS for vulnerability.

And Larry made my point quite succeinctly as usual (pardon the spelling LOL)

Statistics are easily manipulated by anyone. The reason I decided to back MS on the point of security/ populairtity is a simple one.

The only articles I have seen that mention PER CAPITA reviews are the ones that MS tauted as correct. IMHO Percapita is the only way to rate this.

Fer instance. One thing politicians love to do is talk about hte crime rate going down. However often they are misleading. (Also most leftwingers quote bad in formation about gun issues too!)

If you have a city population of 1,000,000 and have 1,000 murders.
Next year Half the people leave. So you have 500,000 people and Murder drops to 600!

Politicians would say this is a 40% Reduction in Homicide! However in truth its a 20% Increase in Homicide percapita.

Both statements are technically true, but not all the details were examined.

That is my only point.

Arguing over which OS is better is kinda pointless

A bad comparision. When New York has one of the worst crime rates in the world.

Please do not turn this topic in to a linux or windows bashing thread. The fact of the matter in my opinion is that there are many flaws in the article, however that doesn't make one OS better than the other. Therefore please keep your comments focused on the article.

Not even close. Of all cities in America with populations of 300,000 or more, New York doesn't even show up at all on the list of the worst 29 cities. And that is just the US! New York actually is among the lowest cities in the World in crime rates. So the analogy is very accurate.

New York is actually the 2nd lowest US city in crime rate. That chart is on this page.

This is for 2001. New York crime rate has actually dropped even more since then.

Thank you for the wise advise. Next time I won't bother posting about these kind of articles. They're are not worth getting banned about.

We are not trying to censor anyone here, and no one will get banned for expressing their opinion. However, it is also in our best interest to keep this forum clean, and prevent conflics from occuring.

I think you missed something. Read my post again. I said that there is another list with the cities with the lowest crime rates. The link is in the post. Los Angeles is on that list.
