Intel Dual Core 2.8 vs P4 3.0Ghz Hyperthread?

Postby _Taz_ » Mon Mar 05, 2007 2:28 pm

i am trying to build a rig on a tight budget.
purpose:
non-gamer machine
MSOffice suite (mostly excel)
picture editing from digital camera (minor stuff, cropping, resize, touchup, etc..)
email
surfing
Winxp Pro (maybe vista )
I can get the dual core chip for $29 more. from what I read it would be worth the difference.

anyone offer some advice?
TIA

If you mean the Core 2 Duo Processor than yes, absolutely. As for the P4 Dual Core, it will make a difference although I am not sure how much. Up to you really.

hmm, just looked it up, it's not a Core 2 Duo, it's dual core..
Intel
Pentium D
BX80553915
CPU Socket Type: LGA 775
Core: Presler
Dual-Core
Pentium D 915
Operating Frequency: 2.8GHz
FSB: 800MHz
L1 Cache: 24KB+32KB
L2 Cache: 2 x 2MB
Manufacturing Tech: 65 nm
Vista Ready Yes
64 bit Support Yes
Hyper-Threading Support No

guess I been out of the hardware side too long, i thought all Intel dual cores were called Core 2 Duo. gee now I'm confused..

Core 2 Duo (and now Core 2 Quad) are the latest revisions of the Intel Dual Core Series, get the latest possible, it will make your PC last longer.

Unfortunately the core 2 duo will cost you almost twice as much, but it will run better and cooler than the Pentium D

Yea, the Pentium D is alright but it does run quite hot. I had to disable the fan control to keep the temps below 55C. Really, I've been building a couple computers lately with the 65w Athlon X2 3800+... it's really great. You should definitely consider it for a budget system.

If I am correct, the P4 Dual Core version emits tons of heat and it still won't be able to beat a fast AMD CPU. In fact, I think the P-D actually runs slower than the Pentium 4 in some cases and the AMD64 can beat it with ease.

The performance, at best, is questionable. It can be a hair faster or slower than the normal P4.

Core 2 Duo. Hands down.

i do have Pentium 4 3.40Ghz HT w/ 800mhz FSB - SuperFast... but it burns... heats up so quickly

i built that sys back in 2005. I wanted to buillt a new core 2 duo sys, but its not worth spending another 1000 bucks for me now. p4 3.40 does what i want it to do!

- i do video editing, photoediting/creating flyers, & high res posters with Adobe Photoshop, audio editing with Adobe audition, basic surfing, office suites, i used to play Call of Duty 2.. but then i finished the game. Now i have Windows Vista installed. works sweet.

the max uptime that i had my pc up was 23days // worked fine. had to restart! yuck! was trying to hit 1 month!
