Windows XP in a dual boot with pre-installed Windows Vista

Postby ns doug » Tue Mar 06, 2007 3:34 am

I've installed Windows XP in a dual boot with a pre-installed Windows Vista using the steps that you outlined but cannot access Windows XP at the Windows Boot Manager prompt, instead I get a failed to start message.

File:\ ntldr
Status: 0x000000f

Do I need Windows XP service pack 2 in order to make the boot over to Windows XP. I installed Windows XP with the original disk and the message that I'm receiving is that something is corrupt or missing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to PROnetworks! Boot to Vista and post a screenshot of your Disk Mgmt console so we can see the status of your HDD's/partitions. If you are familiar with the "System" partition and what it provides, you need to copy ALL of your XP boot files to the System partition (Whether it's Vista or XP) and these XP boot files are:
ntldr
ntdetect.com
boot.ini

Enjoy the site!

Your images are too small to read.

From the past I will assume some things... Vista = C: XP = E: you are booting to Vista

Find the three file: ntldr, NTDETECT, boot.ini and copy them to both drive C: and drive E:. (You will have to run off hide system files and folders)
While booted to Vista, within VistaBootPro, delete the entry for XP/Legacy OS. Add a new entry for Legacy OS/XP pointing to E:

Reboot computer and try to go into XP.

TAKE in consideration I assumed several things. If XP is on D: the change the E: entries to D:

Edit: BTW the images you post are from imageshack, use the link that says for posting to forums with thumbnail........

I followed the steps that you suggested and transferred the files to both C and D drive but I am now receiving an error message on the VistaBoot PRO diagnostic.

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system>
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Hi,
The default in the VistaBoot Pro is set to XP but if I change the default setting to Vista I get the error message mentioned in my first e-mail of this string. I can't return to XP through the start up and have to open Vista, go to Vistaboot Pro and change the default setting back to XP.

Hi Jeff,

Yes, I can boot both os's but not at startup. The option is not available. I go directly to XP if that is the default. If I set Vista as the default then I get the boot manager page at start up but cannot toggle and open XP. Therefore, I have to select Vista and go to VistaBoot Pro and change the default and exit through the VistaBoot Pro program. The next start will open XP. The error message in the start up boot manager is that "ntdlr" is missing although it is now available to both systems.Thanks Doug

Boot to Vista, Take a snapshot of VistaBootPro and Diskmanager. Post to imageshack and stay in Vista. I will be back couple of hours from now or Julian, Kevin or somebody can help step you through. Just stay in Vista from there.
