VistaBootPRO3.1 w/Vista on 1 drive and XP Pro on a different drive ????

Postby GaryLog » Sun Mar 18, 2007 6:29 pm

My setup:
Windows XP Pro installed first on 1st drive( sata) first install
Windwos Vista Ultimate installed on 2nd drive (Sata) installed after XP Pro
These are 2 completely different hard drives.

I have always been able to go to the bios and pick the drive I want and boot to either OS System.

I want to be able to boot up and pick which OS I would like to boot into without having to go to the Bios to make that change.

I installed VistaBootPro 3.1. I went to Manage OS Entires and clicked Add an operating system entry, clicked on Drive letter and picked D where XP Pro is installed, And then went to OS name and called it Windows XP Pro and clicked Apply. In the View setting both Vista and Windows XP Pro are there it reads as follows:

Entry #1
Name: Microsoftw Windows Vista
BCD: (current)
Boot Drive: C:
Windows Drive C;
System Bootloader: \Windows\system32\winload.exe
Windows Directory: \Windows

Entry #2
Name: Windows XP Pro
BCD ID: (ntldr)
Boot Drive: D:
Windows Drive:
System Bootloader: \ntldr
Windows Directory:

In the Manage OS Entires: it looks like this:
Manage OS Entires
OS List Microsoft Windows Vista
Windows XP Pro
Then I rebooted, when I rebooted in the select OS both Vista and XP Pro are there, Vista boots fine but XP Pro when selected boots to a black screen and never boots.

What do I have to do to be able to boot to either OS when I boot up the system?

Update: I tried to reinstall the Vista bootloader using the Vista BootPRO3.1 and I am getting the same results as above, nothing has changed.
When I go to Msconfig and to boot the only OS is Vista.

When I reboot and try to boot to Windows XP Pro I get:
Invalid Boot.INI file
Booting from C:\Windows|

Hi and welcome to PROnetworks! It seems that each of your physical SATA drives thinks it is the System drive. To verify this, please post a screenshot of your Disk Mgmt console from both XP and Vista. Also tell us how you installed each OS, including the order and whether you unplugged any of your HDD's during either of the OS installs. Enjoy the site!
BTW, I'll be moving this topic to the appropriate area shortly......

As per Kevin's post...... screen snapshot of Disk Manager is necessary and post the contents of your boot.ini also.

For posting images, you need an image hosting site, of which many are free like photobucket and imageshack. You upload your image to your hosting site, then simply copy the URL of your hosted image and paste that location here.

Kevin you are correct. If you look at the disk manager in Vista and XP. Each one thinks it is the system drive. Tell us how you went about installing each OS.

Windows XP pro has been installed in drive C for years.

When I went to install Vista, I went into bios and changed the boot priority to boot from DVD/CD rom drive of course, and when vista had me choose a drive I picked the D drive for installation and followed whatever prompt I needed to follow to install Vista.
