Brother HL-2170W prints with a white column

I just got a new workgroup laser printer so that I can have a fast printer at college that won't need to be tethered to anything. When I first started using it, it was printing little dashes along the right side every 4cm, so I took the drum unit out, removed the toner cartridge from the drum unit, shook it from side to side, put it back in the drum unit, and then slid the slider on the drum unit from the right to the left about 3 times. When I put it all back in, the dashes on the right were gone but now when it prints there is a whole column where nothing prints. It's just white. It's just under 1cm thick, but definitely a problem. Anyone know what this could be? Or a remedy for it?

Edit: OK, I tried cleaning the mirror on the inside and replacing the toner cartridge... nothing different :( So I tried cleaning that corona wire on the drum unit with the slider again, nothing doing it either. Did I get a defective drum unit?
