Streaming MP3 files on a web page
Does anyone know the best way to stream or play mp3 files with start/stop capability on a web page? In some way that won't take terribly long to download?
Thanks
just use the embed tag or make a player in flash.
as for taking long time to download it all depends on what you want if you don't mind sacrificing quality then just use LAME or another Mp3 Encoder and reencode them to a lower bitrate like 24kbit or 64kbit etc.

I am no expert, but using JavaScript or a tiny Java applet would work quite well.
The simplest way, as mentioned above, would be to just use an embed tag.

The primary purpose of the DATA statement is to give names to constants; instead of referring to pi as 3.141592653589793 at every appearance, the variable PI can be given that value with a DATA statement and used instead of the longer form of the constant. This also simplifies modifying the program, should the value of pi change.

I am not too sure on the legality of this. If it is for a intranet it should be ok but if it is for the www and it is music then I would check.

Do a google for "windows streaming media" the windows encoders are able to actually stream music across the net.

That would only contribute to the machine, stay away from license style codecs. Most audio formats are "streamable" in the classical sense.
Hell even mp3 has restrictions, your best bet is to take the zero patent approach and use OGG Vorbis. Support is growing very rapidly, not only that but sound quality is better (IMHO) than mp3 at lower bitrates ( < 96 kbit/s).
I have actually stopped encoding into mp3. All audio that needs to be compressed is encoded using OGG Vorbis.
