Pigeon Beats Telkom South Africa in Data Race (Telkom is my ISP)
By Nicky Smith
Sept. 9 (Bloomberg) -- A racing pigeon called Winston carrying four gigabytes of data strapped to its leg beat Telkom South Africa Ltd.’s ADSL data service download time by flying from Howick in South Africa’s Kwazulu-Natal province to Durban, Sapa reported.
The flight took an hour and eight minutes, the agency said citing Kevin Rolfe, the head of information technology company, The Unlimited IT. In total it took just under three hours for the bird to fly to the port city of Durban and have the data uploaded onto the call center’s system, Sapa said.
In the same amount of time the ADSL transmission of the same data size had only completed 4 percent of its upload, the news agency said. The 11-month old pigeon’s progress had been slowed by overcast and rainy conditions, Sapa said. Winston was “over the moon” about his achievement, according to Rolfe, Sapa reported.
The idea for the race was born out of the frustration of an Unlimited IT staff member at the long transmission time for data, Sapa said. Pynee Chetty, a spokesman for Telkom, said he couldn’t immediately comment, when called by Bloomberg.

The fastest DSL we have here is 4Mb/s and that costs more than $300 per month with a 5 GB cap. I can't justify that cost as I could while having it expensed at the business I sold a few years ago, so I'm down to a crawl. It takes me 16 or more hours to download a Windows 7 OS and if power cuts either here or at the ISP server, even longer. Oh yeah, the ISP's here reset the modems quite frequently to read usage I think, usually round 6 am and 6 pm, so one's gotta watch the time and pause the download or lose it and start again Just one of the joys of living in a uhm...developing nation.
Graham, in South Africa, carrier pigeons are faster than DSL.
EDIT: d*mn, I need to look at the second page of a thread before I post...

They may have changed how it worked, but usually after about 50MB down/5MB up speedboost would cut out and you would go back to your "as advertised" speed. Unfortunately, I don't know of any speed test site that can do this and it's just something you have to watch when uploading/download files.

Re: Internet connection speed test
My internet speed was slow only. When i checked the speed test from http://www.dslreports.com/tools i received the following speeds:
Download speed:1995
Upload speed: 262
So i try this procedure
1.Go to Start-> Run-> and type gpedit.msc
2. Expand the Administrative Templates branch
3. Expand the Network tab
4. Highlight QoS Packet Scheduler
5. Click on Limit Reservable Bandwidth and check the enabled box
where i got this procedure from google search. Still i am unable to increase the internet speed. Can any body give me the right solutions pls?
6. Then Change the Bandwidth limit % to 0 %
