By then mp3's wont exist and the portable player that plays the new format will be faster than todays workstations.

Yes they are, it is built on the AMD archetecture.Intel is planning to get it into production the do a reverse engineering on the platform to try and get a diifernt archetecture but MS$ has already announced it would not support another so they are going to have to follow on this one for a change and intel hates to follow its much smaller rival.

But Intel already has 64bit architecture supported by MS. It is the Itanium chips. The new ones , Itanium II , have as many features as Itanium I , but also featuring a 32bit ( enhanced ) mode that provide backwards combatibility.

Furthermore , Intel don't have to reverse engineer because they actually have full access to all AMD's patents , as part of the deal that allows AMD to produce x86 combatible processors.

I know Ed.

I commented Rob's comment. Itanium is an Intel 64bit Risc processor that offers a 32bit combatibility mode ( x86 ).

Nope , they're high end processors. They're used to build a really high end server ( HP uses them a lot ). You can run Linux , Windows , Solaris and some *nix flavors on it.

I'm sure Intel will soon release a 64bit processor but I'm afraid they won't be so kind to us and release a RISC processor. Prescot already has 64bit instruction set ( it is a CISC processor ) but not even the new Xeons ( Noccona ) will be close to Itanium.
