Memo to Weinsteins on “A Single Man” trailer & poster: Are you serious???With its Oscar-qualifying release just a month away, the new Weinstein-produced trailer for A Single Man has been unveiled along with a poster. However, I refuse to post them here. "How can this be?" you might ask. After all, I chose the film as one of my 3 Top Picks (out of 30 I saw) from the recently concluded Toronto International Film Festival.

The fact is I am absolutely appalled at the trailer. I loved the film but am dumbfounded at how they are using the presence of Julianne Moore to fool audiences into thinking her role is much larger than it is. Ms. Moore is one of my favorite actresses but she is simply not central to this film. Meanwhile Nicholas Hoult and Matthew Goode, who are the pivotal figures in the story, appear for several seconds in the trailer.

Keep in mind that a previously-issued trailer in advance of the film's premieres at Venice and Toronto, produced by director Tom Ford's company, appears to be for a much different movie than the one the Weinsteins purchased.

I have no interest in reinforcing the obvious Weinstein plan of deceiving people into thinking A Single Man is a heterosexual love story between Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, which it clearly is not.

IndieWIRE's Peter Knegt echoes my thoughts quite eloquently.

"The new trailer essentially is altered to suggest the core of the film is the relationship between Colin Firth and Julianne Moore’s characters, even removing from the end of the trailer the names of both Matthew Goode and Nicholas Hoult (who play Firth’s love interests)," Knegt writes in today's indieWIRE (where you can view both trailers, if you so choose). "In with the Oscar buzz, out with the gayness. It seems The Weinstein Company doesn’t want to take any chances with all those homophobic Academy members. Call it the “Brokeback Mountain” approach (and remember how well that worked out)."
