Web 2.0 and great expectations - This article is Part III of a three-part series on IT consumerization and the future of work. The first article introduced the concept of IT consumerization, and the second took a look at how this phenomenon is affecting IT departments at academic institutions.

The present article, which covers IT consumerization in the enterprise, picks up on a number of themes from the previous two articles, so I encourage you to read Parts I and II before jumping into the discussion thread with feedback on this installment. For this third installment of my series on IT consumerization, I interviewed Rajiv Pant, vice president of technology at CondéNet (the digital arm of Condé Nast Publications).

Rajiv is mainly responsible for the company's online presence, but he's watching many of the same trends and themes that I've outlined in the previous two installments play out across CondéNet. I started out by asking Rajiv how IT consumerization has affected his own work habits and those of his users, and his response provided a great illustration of a point that I made in my first article on IT consumerization.

I suggested that, when it comes to software, users' work habits and expectations of how apps should look and act are conditioned by their experience of Web applications like Google Maps. They then bring those expectations with them to work, where they're often frustrated by the limitations of comparable systems that they're required to use.
