Just how bad is Windows Vista really hurting? Maybe web trends can answer that. I've monitored several sites over the last 30 days that I have Analytics data on. Since I'm a webmaster, and I work as one professionally, I'm fortunate enough to have a wide array of sites to evaluate. Now I know Google Analytics has some flaws - but in general I believe it captures a decent picture. I am a fairly advanced PC user and I don't blog its data tools and I doubt more than 5% do. I also believe that most folks using XP and Vista are definitely using the internet, so my sampling should give a decent picture of the trends. So I'd estimate a 5% chance of error at best. Let's take a look at the statistics.

Tech Oriented News/Support Site. The demographic here is highly male and age is typically 20-45. Typically very intelligent crowd including casual visitors.
XP - 53.51%
Vista - 43.49%

Travel Oriented Site. The demographic here is mostly female, but not by much. Age is typically over 35. Typically very wealthy crowd.
XP - 81.76%
Vista - 13.72%

Television Station Site. The demographic here is varied amongst many age groups, but typically is more predominant amongst older adults. Visitors are usually well educated and somewhat wealthy.
XP - 83.13%
Vista - 12.59%

Education Portal. The demographic here is mostly schools, students, and teachers. The average age is like under 20. Visitors are split between male and female. Education is usually K-12.
XP - 88.96%
Vista - 7.06%

Even the tech oriented site (PROnetworks) is 10% in favor of XP. That honestly surprises me. But the landslide margin of XP to Vista on the other sites is really incredible. So I ask, just how much IS Vista really hurting? Apparently if you consider the above statistics across a wide demographic... it's hurting a lot.

Well Gordon, I have to disagree with you on needing the 'best of the best' rigs from 2 years ago. I built a modest AMD Venice system with 1GB RAM and a cheap video card some 3.5 years ago and Vista ran great with all the bells and whistles enabled with a WEI of 3.9, due to the video card. Early XP machines from 6 years ago would certainly have been inadequate. I'm only talking about myself here and not about businesses. I know of a guy who still runs an XT for his shop, why change if it works.

you need to keep in mind how often people replace there computer. Vista has been on the market like a year or so. I would guess that the average home person only replaces there computer once every three years.

That means that Vista really hasn't had the time to move into the home. Then you have the fact that only the best of the best computers sold 2 years ago could run Vista means that the average computer owner can upgrade.

You need to compare how many user had xp as opposed to me 1 year after xp's release.

Seems to me the biggest question is still how many user have mac as opposed to MS.

Computers just were not ready for Vista. I love Vista but I only use C2D's or better. I have about 35, well over half running vista.

Some of the figures don't surprise me. Educational facilities, etc, that may be using the education portal probably won't have invested in Vista over XP yet.

The fact that the figures for Vista are so high on the tech site is probably simply due to the "must have it" mentality prevalent in tech users for anything new!

I'd be interested to know that too, especially with the percentage.

Is the 10% in favor of XP a typo? Did you mean 10% in favor of Vista instead?
