XP Pro and Vista64 to XP Pro and Server 2008

Postby khowland on Thu Nov 20, 2008 11:09 pm

my current dual boot is XP Pro and Vista 64. Each OS has its own harddrive. The boot pro software is installed on my XP OS drive and nothing on my Vista drive. Everything is working fine for a year now, but i want to be rid of Vista and move to the Server 2008 Super Desktop approach for obvious reasons.

What I would like to hear some opinions on is if i should just simply launch to vista, and load server 2008 from there. it is upgradable from there but i would select the clean install. would this muck up my current boot pro setup? i was hoping it would be seamless and i could simply change the reference name from vista to server2008 and no other changes would be needed.

any help would be appreciated....

How seamless that will be depends on which OS you have installed on the disk tagged (System) as per Disk Management. If it's Windows XP then you will have no problem at all and should be able to simply use VistaBootPRO to rename your Server 08 installation if you want or at worst delete your old Vista boot menu item.

If you have Vista on the drive tagged (System) then I'd suggest you backup your BCD store using VistaBootPRO and make copies of the boot system files of both operating systems (XP and Vista) so that you can restore them and the Vista BCD once you've installed Server 08.

Obviously any data you want to keep on the Vista install should be backed up too.
