Trying to setup a dual boot of vista/xp with vista installed first.

xp and vista are installed on the same drive, vista is partitioned on C: while xp is on F:

i ran through the steps for vista boot pro, and it setup properly, but when i choose to boot xp i was getting 'ntldr not found'.

so i changed the boot setting to the D: drive for xp, and it started up, but within xp it shows no D: drive, and my partitions are completely rearranged.

my D: in vista shows as E: in xp, my C: as F: and F as G:

That is common and can not be worked around. When you boot into each OS it will claim drive C: as the OS and assign the others as they come in order.

are you sure?

it should be fixable by modifying xp's boot.ini.

but im not sure what to configure it to.

i assumed setting the boot loader to boot the the F: drive, then in xp saying its on the first partions would work.



if it is actually un avoidable. where do i install xp's apps to?

When you log into XP you will install to the C: drive when XP is your C: drive.

When you log into Vista, install to C: drive.

You can not run one application from XP when in Vista and visa versa.

vista is already installed and xp is already installed.

all of these are one one drive, just different partitions.

C: vista / D: storage / (E: dvd drive) / F: xp


when i installed xp it looks correct, it installed on the 12Gb Unused partition i made for it as F:

but when im in xp, the partition names go to crap.

When I set up a dual boot I remove all drive letters higher than the letter C from everything that's not a hard drive or partition.

Then I boot from the Windows disk and set up my dual boot.

I never get that drive lettering nonsense when I do it that way.

You mentioned partition names.

As stated, when you boot to Vista it will be C: and when you boot to XP it will be C:. This is Microsoft and is out of our control.
