Here is another thing I found

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

Try manually going to the WU site again after a reboot.

Jeff, seems like a problem with the Automatic Update services (obviously). Try running the procedure that Daniel has posted above, it should re-register all the required components for WAU.

If you want a bit more information, have a look in the WindowsUpdate.log file under the %SystemRoot% directory. It should tell you the reason why they're not installing.

One last little tip, download Dial-a-Fix and give it a shot. It's a one-click application that can fix a variety of Windows Service and Registry issues, particularly the Automated Update Service. I've used it many-a-time when I've had machines with WAU issues.

Well I ended up screwing around last night till it would not boot. hehehehe lolololol

Have any of you ever done that :)

I found out how to fix it on MS site but I wanted to find the heart of the problem and why it did this.

I have a customer's computer that will not update. I am going to try to re-regsiter the WAU on his.

Your wife must know my wife, because that is exactly what happened to my last laptop. Now she is eyeing up the one that I just traded a desktop for. LOL

Yes, it's usually a sign that XP has been corrupted and should be clean reinstalled.

The second most likely cause is if you have installed IE7, and subsequently done a "repair install" at a later date. Reinstalling IE7 before attempting any other updates usually works around this issue in this particular case, but not always.

This was a fresh install, I install SP3 from the CD.

I did a fresh install again and let win update install SP3. no problems now.

I chunked the SP3 disk and downed the ISO again.
