Win 7 is Running XP won't boot (safe mode sreen for xp)

Postby Thebutcher7 » Mon Mar 22, 2010 11:19 pm

Hi All,

I am having a dual boot problem. Any help would be greatly appreaciated. (I just purchased Dual Boot Pro) But have questions on how that will solve it.

Here it is.

Vista was pre installed when the Laptop was purchased 2 months ago.
I wasted no time with Vista but (I was elegible for a 7 upgrade)
So I Partitioned the 300 gig harddrive and installed XP Pro on it (not using vista at all but it was on the other partition of a single HD)

Last week my 7 Home upgrade came in the mail so I felt it was time to Install it.
Before installing it I installed "Easy-BCD" and some how got Vista to work again after several hours not sure if it was that, however, XP Pro does not boot.
SInce I was at Vista again, I decided it was best to throw WIndows 7 upgrade over Vista.

7 Upgrade went well and running as of now but XP does not boot, I keep getting the safemode Black screen ect.. and even that won't load XP, but I do see XP trying to load for 3 seconds then it defaults back to (Chose OS thing NOw it currently Lists Windows 7 And WIndows XP

On My computer Both Partitions are recognized C: us Win 7 and D: Win XP (Now I remember XP used to be F: and my DVD was D: but I switched it (?)
The other thing is that there is a back up partition that uses 11 Gigs, that was on there before from Vista.

Now I started Dual Pro and it sees Windows 7 and Windows Legacy. I stoped right there because I don't know what to do next and would love your guys/Gals expertise support :)

I heard great things about DualBoot Pro, I just want to make sure I don't mess anything up.

(I also notice the path to XP is "\NTLD" and that is while Win 7 has a whole path to it.

Thanks in Advanced. (The main thing is that I have under 24 hours to get this fixed for a very important presentation that I need XP Pro for.

Thanks Nativedude,

I unchecked hidden operting system files then went back to mycomputer and clicked on the 7 drive which is C: and couldn't find the ntldr and the other files, should I be looking in a certain folder on the main C drive. Also I noticed (while in advanced under the view tab, there was another option stating show hiden files, it unchecked)

Thanks Again

The files mentioned should be on the partition that is marked, System, Boot, Active, in the Disk Management screen

Thanks again,

I just found NDTECT Boot.ini and ntldr in the D: drive on the installed XP along with the Boot folder in XP 7 is on the C: Drive, should these files be copied and pasted into any certain location of the WIndows 7 Drive or just right in the front?

Thanks for all your help again

They go on the root of the Windows 7 drive which should be C:\

Tried it, but it still won't boot up.

I put the 3 files in to the root of C: Drive which says it is running 7. I noticed the active drive is says XP which is Drive D: and that is where I found the 3 files. I am next gon try to see if the boot.ini is incorect.

The boot.ini says this
There were two warnings,
-------

Boot ini was used on windows xp and earlier edditions
2nd warning was about BCDedit"useBCDEDIT.exe to Modify windows vista boot options

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT
-----
I did not directly copy and paste this, this was from the guide and I changed the Partitions numbers and added what the warnings said.

Now I tried to edit the boot.ini file by clicking open (it opend up notepad, but wouldnt let me save it when I put 2 in for the partion parts

Can you post a copy of your Disk management screen that will show how your boot.ini file should read

it appears that your boot.ini file should read

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT
