Win 7 and SBS2003: still not working

Postby lormar » Mon Feb 15, 2010 4:17 pm

I've tried both the methods detailed for Win7 + WinXP but they don't work.
The boot menu shows up but, Win7 boots, SBS2003 doesn't (white flashing cursor on black screen).
Any suggestions?

Do you have a small partition on the drive that W 7 is installed on, with no drive letter and tagged (System Reserved) or just (System) of about 100 or 200 MB?

Right click it and select "Change drive letter and path...", then select "Change" and accept the first drive offered, DO NOT format when that option is offered and OK out of there.

You should now be able to copy and place the W2K3 boot system files in the (System) partition. It may still be necessary to change your Server 2003 boot.ini if it is not pointing to the correct partition.

If this is not your problem, let us know.

I just have 2 partitions (C and D) of 25- 175 GB.
C is Win7
D is WinServer (installed after Win7).
I don't understand very well what you are suggesting. Why should I create a 3rd partition?

Goto the Disk Manager under Windows 7 and see if there is a 100 meg partition that is hidden. That is the one he is referring to that contains the necessary boot files for Windows 7

There is a 63 GB "OEM" hidden partition that I guess is the DELL diagnostic programs partition and a 3 GB primary hidden partition.
The D partition is a logic drive with Win Server 03, the OS not booting (win 7, on the C primary partition, boots fine).
No letter can be assigned to the 3gb hidden partition using win7 disk managment.

Which partition is tagged (System) in disk management? Please post a screenshot of disk management if you are unsure.

See these two guides. The files and process for W2K3 are exactly the same as for XP :

It's the first thing I had done.

Negative. There's no 100 mb partition that can be seen from disk management. The only one "small" partition with no letter is 3Gb, is a primary partition and it can't be assigned a letter with disk management.

The boot.ini file in the root of the SBS2003 partition contains the following text:

[boot loader]
timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Server 2003 standard" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 7"

I don't know if the boot process of SBS 2003 actually uses this file (or a boot.ini in the hidden partition) , but if it does, what should be changed ?
