The article doesn't say if he's an American citizen. Surely he doesn't have the right to call himself American if he's not.

He's a naturalized American citizen so there's no question that he has the right to call himself as such.

I'm coming upon this rather late but this is why I think we ought to do away with this type of classification. Personally, I think it only makes sense to call yourself an African-American if you came over from Africa, as this young gentleman did.

You're right Will. Those categories mean little. Anyway, I wonder what I "am" then. About a quarter of me is Portuguese from around the late 1600's, a quarter Scottish from around the 1820's and the rest Irish also from around the 1820's. All subsequent ancestors born and I lived in Africa. A white pora-scot-irish-african I guess. Irish rules OK!

Here where I am there's lot's of tribal, ethnic, language, nationality differences but most see each other as either black, white, english or afrikaans, the major distinction being between black and white. The human race is destined to be yellow right? Unless of course we nuke ourselves to extinction or famine and some disease trims our numbers to around a billion or so. Probably the latter...looks much cleaner for posterity.
