The most important improvement, in terms of ordinary day-to-day desktop usage, in my opinion, would be :

I'd have to say this one is also one of the most important fixes:
Can you imagine how many people called their PC vendor for tech support with a WiFi card presumably dead? Good thing I kept my mom's notebook on XP. She uses the laptop in the car for her appointments calendar and I have it set to put it to sleep when the lid is closed, so she can quickly open it up and look without wasting power to start up.
I'm shocked something like that made it without being fixed in SP1. Oh well, it's what I've come to expect. I can only imagine the wonderful problems in Windows 7. MS has promised to fix things that people are telling them need improved... but are we going to see things like GIF support added back in the picture viewer, or a sound system that doesn't suck? Noooo, of course not. The real problems in Windows now are the architectural changes that will unfortunately never be undone.

Where the heck is Vista SP2?!?!?
I see that it has gone RTM and Technet subscribers can download it, but it is still not available for everyone else. Why the heck not?

Service Packs are only released after the basic localisation tasks have been performed, including translating it into all of the basic languages used and ensuring that all local laws have been obeyed.
This takes time
And btw the Beta testers can download it too
