What are your electricity costs for folding?

augie wrote:Ya, Mark is absolutely right. People leave for many reasons and I'm seeing more and more folks leaving the fold these days due to electricity costs. I had not really realized that that was a big expense as our power is the cheapest on the continent as it's mainly hydro and is provincially controlled. I'll have to figure out how much that is for me, I'm curious now.

Leaving both PCs running full out 24/7 cost me about $18 per month so i suppose if people are on a restricted income it could be a bit inhibiting.

I just did a quick and dirty calc using 800W for both @ $0.0746/Kwh(higher rate, the first 30kwh/day=$0.0545) comes out to $18 CDN, $15.54 USD and $11.44 Euros. Wow man, that sure puts things in perspective!

EDIT: I split this off from Kevin D(kd1966)'s millionaire thread as this is an interesting look at our various electric rates.

Well that is not as bad as I thougtht it was, leaving them running 24/7, mine might be a little more, running 2 - 500 W and 1 - 750 W 24/7

You using your PSU rating for this as that will be way too high. Case in point is my X2 which my UPS said used 200W with a 420W PSU and a wimpy 6200 GPU. I have to find the UPS USB cable to see what this quad uses. Hmm, I wonder how accurate the UPS is? What's the rate in IL.?

It is hard to figure out what the rate is with all the different charges listed,
Customer charge 7.24
standard meter charge 2.24
Distribution facilities charge 870 kWh X .02407 = 20.94
transmission service charge 870 kWh X .00829 = 7.21
Electricity supply charge 870 kWh x .07395 = 64.34
Energy Efficiency Programs 870 kWh X.00053 = .46
Franchise Cost 29.83 X 4.853 = 1.45
Total = 103.88

the way I figure it, the cost is right at .12 a kWh

I left the standard monthly charges off my totals as they are a constant and are paid no matter how much you use. According to the kwh you are using in total(870) @ $0.107/kwh . You're paying about %40 more than me but then I have some %12 taxes on top of that.

Remember that you do not use the totaly wattage ofyou power supply. One way to calculate this is either to add up all the wattage that you components use and the calculate it or use a meter to measure the current you are using at the computer. You will need amember in the line of the power line going to your computer, monitor, and any other components you have. Once you get the total current used then multiply the current in amps times the voltage supplied; this will give you the total wattage used.

That is the nerd way but it is interesting to see you do these calculations since I teach engineering at school. Now lets me see if I can use this for my class somehow.

Assuming that I'm doing this correctly, my billing for energy is currently ~$0.15/kWh, so that would be about $50 a month for 500W of usage between my two PCs. Someone can check my math:
500 x 0.1488 x 24 x 30 / 1000 = ~$50
