i just tried pronetworks vistabootloader software thing thats just been released or somthing... its very early hours of morning i havent slept and wasnt thinking straight when i selected a wrong setting in bootloader settings in the program i think i changed to use windows xp instead of vistas by mistake while i was looking at options avalible and due to my tired clumziness i clicked ok then i realised i didnt back it up so i was like uh-oh then i rebooted the pc to see what its done and to my luck now neither Vista or XP will boot it gives me somthing like could not be found or is corrupt its still booting to vistas bootloader thingy ... so now im kinda in an urgent panic because i really dont want to have to reinstall both and have to wipe my hard drives .... anyway to my luck i found Bart PE Live windows cd so i booted that up now i can access all my files, however i can access boot.ini fine but no vistas details are in it. now i can find vistas bcdedit.exe file fine but when i run it just scans through some sort of dos/cmd prompt file then automaticly closes so fast i cant read anything can someone help me urgently on how to fix this, i tried running the vista bootloader program again but because this live version of windows does not have .NET on it it wont run the program at all... please help someone this is really urgent...

As to your issue; the reason there is no Vista info in the boot.ini is because Vista DOES NOT USE boot.ini, Vista uses a BCD, or Boot Configuration Data registry to boot multiple OS's.
Without knowing much more about what happened - I think your best bet is to boot to your Vista DVD and at the Install Now screen, select the Advanced Startup Repair options. This is WinRE and it should be able to recover your Vista install. We'll add XP if it isn't already in your boot menu after that.

ok i will thanks sorryfor barging in i just wasnt sure what to do i wasnt sure if microsoft had added vista installtion repair tools or not onto the dvd. ill give a try now and report back.

ok so far i have got vista to boot now after doing repair...

howver XP still dosent, it gives me an error in vistas boot manager saying

Windows XP is installed on C: drive on my system and Vista is on D:

Any ideas how i can sort this?...

btw thanks for calming me down saying vista has repair tool coz i was about to go nuts :|

Ok, based on that, I would go back into VBPro and delete the XP entry, then reboot with the XP CD to the recovery console and use fixboot (NOTE: this removes the Vista bootloader) and reboot back to XP. Once IN XP, install the VBPro2.0 program and run it. Let us know what the BCD display is

EDIT: What is your HDD partition settup? Is XP your "system" drive?

Because your XP {ntldr} entry is corrupted, you can try two things. From within Vista, using the latest version of VistaBootPRO 2.1, When you first open it, make sure you make a backup of your current bcd file using the Backup option. Then go to the configure Tab, in the Select an OS to Modify, Select you XP entry, for the drive letter, put in C, and then click Apply. Since the entry is corrupted with an unknown, I am not sure if VistaBootPRO will be able to recognize it, but I would try this first.

Once you have done that, go back to View settings and see if the device is now listed as C: instead of unknown. If it is, go ahead and reboot and see if you can get into XP.

If it is not listed as C:, go to your start menu>accessories and find the command prompt, right click on it and select Run as administrator. Once the command prompt is open, type in: bcdedit /set {ntldr} device partition=C:
and press enter. You should recieve a message in the command window saying the operation completed successfully. Then reboot and see if XP is accessible.
