Vista won't boot automatically

Postby Hummingbear on Wed Dec 24, 2008 5:59 am

Hi,

I am trying to install Vista Business 32bit on a new system and although the installation itself presents no problem, I am stuck with a PC that always waits in the boot menu for the user to press enter.

At the first install I set the BIOS order to load from the DVD first. At the first reboot I remove the DVD from the drive and let the installation continue.
During the installation the required reboots ask me to press enter to continue. No problem there.

The problem is that when the installation is done, it always stops at the boot menu. I *have* to enter into the OS. I don't understand it.

In all my googling, newgroups surfing, I can not seem to find a similar problem. I tried editing the boot configuration using bcdedit, msconfig.exe but no matter what I set the options to. It still requires me to press enter whenever I boot the system. I have tried to disable the GUI, reset the correct GUID, use timeouts of 30, 5 and 0 seconds. The timeout counter does not even display!

Its driving me crazy! Anyone have any tips?

I never set the BIOS to boot from the DVD drive, I use the F8 key at the post screen then 'hit any key' to boot from the DVD.

I also leave the DVD in the slot until Vista is finished installing & I hit the desktop. NTS I have never had to hit the 'enter' key to continue installing Vista either.

You may have a bad installation.

I'd wait for some other suggestions before doing another install tho.

Edit: Diffrent PC's act diffrent, You may have to select which drive to boot from after hitting the F8 key on some.

I didn't respond to this immediately, and now JD has gone and posted exactly the same thing that I would have posted if I had !! :P

I have never heard of this sort of behaviour either, although unlike shreader I _do_ generally set DVD to be before the HDD in boot priority...

I would not remove the Vista DVD during setup either, but I can't help feeling that this is related to your specific computer model.

Apart from these ideas, haven't a clue sorry...

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I managed to solve the problem by creating a second boot entry in the menu (pointing to the exact same Vista). The first reboot after that Vista started booting automatically :confused . If dont understand why, but it did. When I had some time to spare later on, I removed the second entry and it still boots automatically like it is supposed to.

I think I've hit a bug of some sort :blink

Congratulations for fixing it ^*^

There are some optional boot settings, and I guess in your case one of them was enabled. With 19/20 hindsight, I'd guess that the behaviour could have been tweaked in the boot tab in msconfig ;)

It will be helpful in future to know your solution in case anyone else has the same trouble, so thank you very much for posting it !! :notworthy
