Vista Build 5456 X64: Install on a RAID Array

Postby Grav!ty on Thu Jun 29, 2006 10:14 am

Many of us have really battled to get the Vista Build 5456 64-Bit version installed onto a RAID array :-?

Has anyone been able to do this on any RAID controller chipset (Intel, NVIDIA, Promise, Silicon Image)?

:confused :confused

I had done it with previous versions by installing to an IDE drive then Installing the drivers for the raid and sata then backing it up or ghosting it followed by restoring it to your desired array. I will let you know if it is working with this build soon as I am about to embark on this venture myself. I finally have a little down time after this past horrrid year!!

I am doing another download right now as the one I had received from elsewhere refused to accept any key provided. Now that its up for CTP it should not be an issue. I also ordered the DVD. ^*^

There was a guide around somewhere on how to do it that I posted.

Hey John,

Been busier than a one armed wall paper hanger but have some down time until next Wednesday. I even have a girl friend now that I have been seeing for about 4 months when I can any way.

Nice wedding pics BTW ^*^

WooT !!! hey there Rob ^*^

Always good to see you in here :notworthy

FWIW I haven't had insurmountable trouble installing it to RAID, either Silicon Image or even the dreaded Promise 378, although I have to admit that the Promise one is a true PITA  :P

Only thing you really need nowadays to do the trick is --- the right drivers :roleeyes

... easier mentioned than come by ...

I've had problems as well . A clean install of 5384 on a nforce mb (asus a8nsli) using the nvidia beta 2 drivers did not work - despite loading the drivers , the raid array could not be seen. build 5456 also failed but in a slightly different way. Loading up the nvidia beta 2 drivers was not even possible as they state that they are not valid on this release. *The documentation deos state that they are for beta 2 onlysoperhaps no surprise.). Obviously not possible to see an array with no drivers loaded so have had to run it on a non raid set up.
I've logged this as a bug with MS but it came back as closed?
Can;t find any info on any updated drivers from nvidia as yet, anyone know if there are any later ones on the horizon?
Are MS going to include any drivers in the DVD in the near future?
Are vendors going to do more for support for x64 as this does seem to be laging behind x86.

Other than the raid issues, do feel that 5456 is quite an advance over 5384, a lot of bugs do seem to have been fixed.

How are you defining the term RAID, JabbaPapa? I know you have an unusual setup on your system. Are you running a RAID0 or RAID5 array or how are the hard drives in your array actually setup? What shows up in Device Manager under your Disk drives? Something like this or a normal list of drives?

Thats great input thanks spikey ^*^

I dont think it will be possible any time soon and certainly not in Vista to include native support for RAID arrays. It's mostly server systems that use RAID, usually for backup purposes. Even in Longorn Server (Server 2007) there is unlikely to be native support for RAID.
