Unable to restore Vista Bootloader

Postby AirArt » Wed Feb 28, 2007 2:43 pm

Hello!
I have the same problem as eremini. I've installed WinXP after Vista and now i can't restore Vista bootloader. Neither booting from Vista DVD and using of recovery console with bootrec and bootsect, nor VistaBootPro, nor (name of illegal program removed/kd1966) can help me. I'm still able to load WinXP only.

So you're saying Vista was installed FIRST to a Logical drive?? Seems odd, but it should work. Here's the deal: for future reference, the recommended order of installing Windows OS's is "Old first to New", but since the deed is done, we'll just fix it. Seeing that you installed XP last, your XP partition SHOULD be your System drive, the drive partition that contains all the boot data for XP (Not Vista yet), so in order to add Vista, install VistaBootPRO 3.1 and REINSTALL the Vista bootloader. If that does not work, then try running the Diagnostics in VistaBootPRO 3.1

Right, I know why --- the Vista pre-boot environment automatically orders any logical partitions AFTER any physical ones, so that having installed XP (putting the boot info in what XP sees as partition 1, but Vista as partition 4), VistaBootPro will put the Vista boot info onto the same logical drive, where the Vista pre-boot environment will be unable to find it.

However if you reinstall Vista in the same environment, you will then be unable to boot into XP ... and if you delete the partition having booted from the Vista DVD, your XP boot data will be lost.

My advice --- boot from the Vista DVD, delete partition 1, and create a new primary NTFS partition in the empty space, and reinstall Vista.

Then ask again about how to restore XP boot capabilities ...

Well, long way round would be ---

Boot from Vista DVD, delete XP partition, then install Vista in empty space ; use VistaBootPRO to add an entry for your main Vista setup ; boot into there, then do a Full System Backup in the Easy Transfer Wizard tools (to data partition) (or other Vista ghosting method) ; boot from XP CD and delete both partitions, create a conveniently sized XP partition in empty space, install XP ; if your Vista is 32-bit, run Vista setup to the remaining space from within XP, otherwise repeat using Vista DVD and install Vista in remaining space ; use Full System Backup file to restore your Vista to its previous state

BTW it may be a good idea before backing up your old Vista, once you get into it, to untag the Documents, Pictures, and Music folders from any locations on the data drive, if you have tagged them there, and WITHOUT moving the files.

Good luck BTW ^*^
