Unable to get XP to boot in a dual boot scenario...

Postby MarkRadaba » Wed Mar 07, 2007 9:35 pm

I'm trying to get XP to boot up in a dual-boot scenario with Vista. I'm using VistaBootPRO 3.1 to alter the boot menu.

I installed XP on the first partition of a SATA drive that was broken up in to 3 partitions. When I installed XP this drive was the only drive connected, so XP thinks it's drive C.

After XP was installed, I reconnected my main Vista drive, which is drive C, making the XP installation drive D.

I can create the entry to load XP in the Vista boot menu, but when I select it, the computer just restarts.

My boot.ini file contains the following entry for XP:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Can anyone give me any ideas on what to try?

Thanks!

You also need to make sure these 3 files are in the root directory on the XP drive.

boot.ini
NTLDR
ntdetect.com

If your XP drive is drive D or disk 1 then your boot.ini should be similar to this

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

If it is disk 0 then it should be similar to this

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
