Ubuntu 11.04 Beta - Anyone had luck?

Ubuntu 11.04 Beta - Anyone had luck?

Postby gries818 » Sat Apr 23, 2011 7:38 pm

I've tried several times today to install Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 on Virtual Box with no success. Seems to always hang at the end of the installation - attempts to download some updates even if you tell it not to. Supposedly it comes out next Friday? Hopefully this problem is just on my end or as a result of it being in Beta, Ubuntu has been one of the most consistently rock-solid and user friendly distros.

No, I was actually going to be trying it here within the week. But I had read some reviews that it wasn't quite ready. I normally use VB as well. I was hoping they would get away from that brown/orange scheme but doesn't look like they did. :no

No, it's obvious that they don't have too many graphic designers on staff lol.

I had a few things I wanted to play around with on a Linux distro, so I just downloaded 10.10. Too bad, I'll play with 11.04 next weekend.

Hmm, I'm thinking the problem may be related to Virtual Box. This newest release from Oracle seems to be having all sorts of problems on Fedora as well. Which is too bad, both Unity and GNOME 3 look really cool and I was hoping to play around with them some

I was finally able to get Ubuntu 11.04 working in VirtualBox. The trick is you have to enable 3D Acceleration and then install the newest guest additions. Oracle doesn't have them included on the VB package yet, you can find them on the site - but they are really hard to find.

This is indeed an issue with Virtual Box.

Looks like Oracle just came out with a new release that should address some of the issues with the new batch of Linux distros.
