Hi there just new here so hello, secondly can you help me ?

Did you ever get this problem sorted as I get the same thing. Immediately I try and run the program I get "index and count must refer to a location within the string. Parameter name: count"

Click OK then program opens and when I tab accross I get 'unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, teh application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click quit, the application will close immediately." Below that Value cannot be null. Parameter name: item

Then there is a big detail box etc.
Running an asus a8nsli delux 2 gb RAM 2xSATA Raid 250Gb Hdrives with Vista 5384 and one back up 250gb with XP 64bit.

Problem I had recently I wiped the backup hdrive lost the boot manager, reinstalled vista lost all my email addresses etc. got the dreaded NTLDR missing and did not know how to fix that.

Can vistabootpro help to prevent this for me in the future if I ever need to wipe the backup drive and reinstall XP64bit ? as I do not want to go through the last 3 evenings again with reinstalling 2 OS and all the crap with it.

One last thing I do notice now after all this when I boot up at the start I have 3 entries one for the old windows version ie XP64bit one for windows ie. Vista and another that does nothing just puts up an error page is there a way to resolve/ delete the third option without buggering up anything, just really nervous around the boot manager now.

Hi David, and welcome to PROnetworks!

There have been a number of changes in how the BCD store is accessed since we first released VistaBootPRO, and we are currently working on an updated version - VistaBootPRO 2.0 which is in its final testing stages. For the interim, a couple of things you can try.

If you go to your Windows\System32 directory, locate the file bcdedit.exe, copy it, and then replace the bcdedit.exe file in the Program Files\Pronetworks\VistaBootPRO with this one, it may solve the first error, which in turn causes the subsequent errors.

If this does not solve the error, please post back and we will see what we can do to help.

Also, if you have an access error, please try right clicking on the VistaBootPRO executable and selecting 'Run as administrator'

One of the issues with the Vista boot loader in regards to dual or multibooting other versions of Windows lies in the fact that if Vista is installed from DVD, it will think of whatever partition it is on as being the C: drive regardless of how the other operating systems see it. Generally the ntldr error may be solved by ensuring that you have ntldr, ntdetect.com, and a properly configured boot.ini file on your system drive, generally your first partition on the drive.

If you get stuck in a situation where you cannot get into Windows, there is a Recovery Environment included on the latest Vista DVD's (or iso's burned to DVD). You can access this by booting from your Vista DVD, going to the second screen, and clicking on the Recovery Options link in the bottom left hand corner. This will give you an option to try to repair your startup environment, and will also allow you to access the sytem recovery, CompletePC restore (if you have made a backup) and you may also access a command prompt which will give you full NTFS access to the file system.

Tried the bcdedit replace that did not work. Also reinstalled vistaproboot and tried it again but still no luck. Also tried run as administrator and the same thing. First box comes up with 'index and count must ...' then I get into the program and tabing accross I get the 'unhandled exception ...' Strange thing though is as I said before on bootup I have 3 options on the vistabootpro 'manage entries' I only have the standard 2 entries of 'earlier version...' and 'microsoft windows'.
Is it worth while saving the ntldr, ntdetect.com and the boot.ini files onto a disc for future safety ?

Also would one of these files contain the info about the 3 options at the start ? maybe the boot.ini ?

When I had my major screw up I tried the vista disc several times but just could not get anywhere with the system recovery it just did not want to change so unfortunately I ran out of options but to reinstall, real pity but I am back up and running now atleast. I am not overly knowledgable about the software side of things I tend to build PC's so want to learn a bit more about OS setups now so I can make sure these sort of problems do not happen in the future.

The issue that you have occurs when VBPro is unable to locate system files that it requires, for various possible reasons, related to particular hardware configs out in the wild.

Remember, both Vista and VBPro are Beta software, and cannot be guaranteed to work perfectly in all circumstances nor in all hardware/drivers/Windows configs.

Most but not all current issues with VBPro can be traced to drivers failure or insufficiency.

There are a lot of strange things about Vista so far. I have an Asus A8n sli delux mobo. Within device manager I think I have presently 3 unknown devices which may or may not be related to an Asus program/ system called AiBooster. Another strange thing is that the NVIDIA hardware firewall does not work or has not been programmed for Vista yet so Beta's are a pain but I always like to get the newest things if possible. Next hunt is for the Vista Beta 2 upgrade builds still running 5384 at present.
