Time to upgrade my system

Postby Grav!ty » Mon Sep 29, 2008 4:14 pm

I noticed that too and generally I buy faster RAM than the default although there's no good reason why, other than many of the ASUS boards support clocking the RAM.

My (the system in my sig) CPU only runs at FSB 1066 and that's what the motherboard's default is for RAM but I added 1333 MHz RAM for a bit of future proofing. I've been left in the dust with RAM at 1600 and 1800 though

By the way, a very interesting feature of that motherboard you are considering is the Express Gate

yeah i saw that feature too. very cool, but unlikely that i will use it as the PC will be on almost all of the time as I run a live scanner feed 24/7.

i'm browsing newegg now for QVL ram. OCZ has never done me wrong so I will likely stay with them.

Going with these items:

Asus P5E Deluxe/Wifi
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131218

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Yorkfield 2.5 Ghz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115043

And some tried and true OCZ Platnum DDR3 1600 2 x 1 GB which is QVL for this board.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820227256

That puts me over my high limit in terms of budget...but as I see it I am future proofing a bit so it will be work the extra $$.

That's a very nice system Steve and I think you'll be highly impressed with it performance wise no matter what system you had before.

I've been running OCZ RAM (Gold) on my Intel Dual Core for quite some time and haven't had an issue. I did have to replace a module because of my attempts at OC'ing but haven't had any hassles since. That's one of the nice things of the OCZ lifetime warranties...no hassles swapping failed parts as long as one keeps invoices and receipts. Their support forum is pretty decent as well and one can get direct OCZ help overclocking on specific boards.

I think I am going to upgrade my video card too. It is certainly outdated at this point. I believe i purchased it almost 3 years ago.

I think I'll look into the Nvidia 9000 series.

I think your board supports crossfire. Although I haven't used an ATi card for quite a few years, I believe some of the newer ones like the 3870's and 4870's are really good cards at competitive prices.

From what I've been reading the 4850 cards are far and away the best bang for the buck card.

I just bought a 9800GT, costs less than the 7600GT I got a couple of years ago.
