Stop Irritating Animations

Stop Irritating Animations

Internet Explorer Five

One of the most annoying things about the internet is going for a quick surf, only to have your progress hampered by reams of animated adverts. With Internet Explorer you are able to halt the animations in their tracks
Select Internet Options from the Tools menu and click on the advanced tab. In the section headed Multimedia click on the box next to play animations to remove the tick and turn them off. If you don't like video or silly sound effects while you browse either, you can turn these off from the same place.

You can also hunt down a certain file on your machine, basically it's own little hidden dns catch. On win 2k it is here: C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Note that it has no filename extentions, the file is literally named Hosts and once you find it, open it with notpad, scroll to the bottom of the file and add this rather huge list starting on the line AFTER localhost (leave that one alone). The entire file should look just like this, or somewhat close:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

Only everything isn't so rigidly left justified that the spaces are crushed out of everything like this post is  . Anyway, there are 7 spaces or one tab between 127.0.0.1 and the address you want to block your browser from accessing. It doesn't really block it, but instead of going to any of those addresses it checks the Hosts file first, if it's listed there it doesn't bother to check with a real DNS server and tries to get whatever stupid ad banner it was trying to load from 127.0.0.1. Guess who that is.....it's you! So ads will never load since you don't have any. By the way, since this insists on making everything resembling a website address into an actuall link no matter what I disable here, DO NOT CLICK ON ANY OF THOSE LINKS! They are evil incarnate and should be copied directly to the hosts file and left to rot and die as they deserve to in the dank dungeon of the Windows system directory.
