SOUND ADVICE

Postby Chippychap » Tue May 26, 2009 11:23 am

Hi Guys, please may I pick your brains?
My PC was pre-owned though only for a short time, it just means I didn't set it up originally.

Specs
INTEL® Core 2 Duo E4400 (2 X 2.0GHz) 1066MHz FSB/2MB L2 Cache
Memory (RAM) 2048 MB CORSAIR DDR2 667MHz (2x2GB)
Motherboard ASUS® P5VD2-VM: DDR2, S-ATA II, 1 x PCI-E x16, 2 PCI, etc
Operating System WINDOWS® XP MCE 2005
Graphics Card 512MB GEFORCE 7300GS (256MB SMA) PCI Express + DVI + TV-OUT
Sound Card Sound Blaster® X-Fi™ Xtreme Audio 7.1

The sound system it is using is Realtek HD, which i think is the onboard system on the MoBo.

Would you lose it and set up the Soundblaster?

I don't really play high tec games but listen to music all the time. :huzzah:
What do you reckon guys?

I would go for the X-FI. However only your ears can tell for sure.

I killed all reference to Realtek but the S/B card doesn't want to play, literally.
I removed my headphones from the rear of the PC and re-sited 'em into the PCI soundcard.
At present I am still trying to figure out why no sound.
Nowhere does it give me the option of which sound doodad to use.
Much tinkering to be done. :bashhead ........... :whistle

You did install the X-FI drivers right and disabled the Realtek in the BIOS? Sorry to be so basic but I had to ask.:)

EDIT: Oopsie, there's no sound disable on your BIOS. You'll need someone better than me if the above doesn't work.

Make sure the BIOS is up-to-date. There seem to be many updates for the BIOS on the ASUS website for this motherboard. Then check if there is a way to disable the onboard sound card. I have an ASUS P5ND2-SLI and I was able to disable the onboard sound card when one of the channels crapped out on me. I now use a PCI sound card and it works fine.

I seem to have, not stepped gently, leaped headlong into a minefield.
Couldn't find an onboard sound disabler in the bios, can't find it in the mobo handbook either, will check both again.
For some bizarre reason I don't have the X-Fi disc so got a driver from the web............BSOD.... :-x
It may be cos the other doodad is present.
The MoBo disc has the Realtek drivers, I use the disc but the R/T drivers don't want to load, just get
"Realtek Driver failure error code 0XE0000227" which apparently has a place in error code history.. ^*^
I'm still cool about it, miss my music but I can't hear much at the mo cos of my screaming. :whistle
Tinkering will continue.
Thanks for being there guys, could you perhaps, er, sing for me? :embarrassed:

I found your manual @
http://www.azmanual.com/download/9353/a ... 94125afc4/
PDF = 1.86 MB dl.

BIOS Section 2.4.4 (Onboard Device Configuration) appears to be your audio controller that can be disabled.
HDA controller (audio)?

Is that what you are looking for?

Hey shreader, you made me go back through my MoBo manual and this is what I found.

Image

Do they cause a conflict when both are installed? on Startup now it mentions "found a new media controller"
which is the S/B card.
Hopefully, when the onboard doodah is disabled it will accept the card driver.
Bless you for your help.
