Smartphone / PDA Selection

Postby rippinchikkin on Wed Aug 06, 2008 9:50 am

Question for anyone out there already using Voice / Data service, and device that they might recommend.
These were a few of the ones I had been considering...

Palm Centro Smartphone (AT&T)
http://www.amazon.com/Palm-Centro-Black ... 94&sr=1-15
BlackBerry Curve 8310 Smartphone (AT&T)
http://www.amazon.com/BlackBerry-Curve- ... 194&sr=1-3
Samsung BlackJack II Black Smartphone (AT&T)
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-BlackJack ... 194&sr=1-5

The above selections are based on purely on price point (as in they are basically free, with my contract renewal).
At the moment Im with ATT and really FWIW, I kind of plan to stay with them unless someone can show me a MUCH better deal... the data and voice service are gonna run me about 90 bucks a month, so if you do know where I can get a better deal, by all means let me know.
Thanks for your advice guys. (of course I always do my mobile shopping at amazon, they usually offer the best deals on hardware and such, but dont mind being proven wrong.)
Again thanks for any information.
;)

We have 3 of the Blackjack II in our house. My son has the PDA personal plan and like unlimited text, plus his voice, he is on his own plan.

I have the 200 text I think it is, with PDA personal, which is unlimited data and a voice plan, and my wife has the just the PDA personal with voice plan. We are with AT&T and my wifes and mine cost right at $130 a month

I love my new Moto Q Global with ATT. I went through a lot of research before I got it and I'm very happy with my choice thus far.

I was just reading about that one, and to be honest..... am kind of leaning towards it ATM. Most of the things I read about the Samsung were pretty good, the biggest draw back is (least according to the reviewers) is that it has no wifi? Still there is a cost involved with the Moto, and the Blackjack would be free ;) ... But if the device is worth it, then its worth considering.

When you say it doesn't have WiFi what do you mean exactly, that you can't use it as a modem for a laptop or something?

I was assuming it meant that it could only gain internet access via the service, and not show up as an object on my network. Like I have a palm it has wifi, it has no internet service (just a simple pda) but it can browse the net via my network, get email etc etc... make doc transfers via network and so on. You got me, even though I read it, I too was kind of confused (but made that faithful 'assumption' lol)
Ah, Im still deciding, and the black jack II looks pretty tempting too. Im still in my early stages... it will be at least the Sept before I actually get one. Still testing the waters, reading and learning all sorts of things..

Wait, the Global can connect to my network? I didn't know it could do that.

Ahh ok, the reason I ask is because my son has puts some cracks on his, using his as a modem for his laptop.
He also found google maps to use for GPS, which is free, instead of using the TeleNav that AT&T offers for a fee.
He has found a cool browser called Skyfire, that works better than the one that comes with the phone, it has a beta signup for it, but there is a way of getting it now, by entering a code, that he knows.

Ok I dunno if it can, just that is what 'I assumed' they meant. My palm will (I think, charging it now) I had quit using it just because the lack of apps, it has no phone and so on. I do know the palm has wifi has a wifi adapter built in, the last time I was using it I didnt have the wireless network.

Wow the palm has a dialer too (hehe I just plugged it in to see what it will do)? Didnt know it had a softphone on it. Well Im charging it now to see what connections I can get.
I am not clear on all the 'features' of these smartphone/pda's. (of course thats why Im here bugging you guys. LOL) and what they will actually do. Another reason I asked, to make sure I was getting the best one with the most practical features.
Hehe sorry I didnt mean to cause all this confusion. Oh man. :P
