Road to Hana Highway Travel Updates

Postby kanaloa on Fri May 13, 2005 1:32 pm

Road to Hana update. When I first heard the news about the Road to Hana being partially closed and completely closed in a portion of June, I about flipped. I'll be there doing research a week from this coming Sunday, but lucikly the Road to Hana won't be completely closed yet.

In fact the Hana Highway closures might even work in my favor... reducing traffic so we can do our research. Let's just hope the weather cooperates. Last time a large low pressure system was moving over the islands and clouded up ALL my coastal shots.

Falling rocks from the looks of it this time. A park ranger was killed near Kipahulu last year when clearing rocks off the road.

This construction is at Mile Marker 11, for a quarter mile. It'll be restricted to 1 lane from April to August it appears (8am-3pm), and completley shut down June 21-July 1st.

Why they are doing it in the middle of the day is rediculous. It's peak tourist season almost. And the poor vendors are loosing up to 80% of their profits along the Highway, where that's there livelyhood.

The Road to Hana went under MAJOR renovations in the 90's to make it more driveable. It still is one of the world curviest roads. Nearly 60 miles of 600 hairpin turns and 52 one lane bridges.

It's quite the drive... but it's one of the most beautiful on earth. That's why our guide sells so well for it... it's very very popular.

I'm excited as heck about Maui... but what I'm really looking forward to is Kauai. I cannot WAIT to hike the Kalalau Trail (remember when I was Kahuna Kalalau here??), and the Alakai Swamp / Pihea Trail hike.

Here's some beautiful shots of Pihea/Alakai to the Kilohana Lookout
