I have XP on C: and Vista on G: in a dual boot configuration. Is it possible to do away with xp and load an image of my G: drive to C:? If so what extra steps do I need to take?

That should work fine as Vista sees itself as being on drive C (unless you installed Vista from within Windows XP). Depending on what imaging/restore software you're using, it's usually necessary to restore to a drive/partition of the same size or larger and with the same drive letter as that from which the image was taken.
I can get the disk to boot but it hangs at prepairing desktop. I am using Norton Ghost and have been using it for years to restore my disks so I dont think it is an image issue. I would guess it is some kind of problem due to installing the OS on a partition other than partition 0 on drive 0. I did not intsall the second OS from within the first, but rather booting from the DVD.
