i am using outlook express with win xp ...
i am trying to use the request read receipt feature so i know people got my email and have read it.
i checked the box for it ... tested it and sent it to another one of my email addresses and it does nothing

any ideas?

Just out of interest, does the account you're sending it to get downloaded into Outlook Express, too? If so then it's possible you've already set the option to ignore read/delivery requests automatically, that's why it's not working.

On that note, you may find that you won't get a lot of delivery receipts back, anyway. A lot of places block them as they create unnecessary traffic on networks and even more people just don't respond to them anyway.

no my other accounts i log into normally from their website... my school account and a hotmail account.

is there any other email programs out there that have good options ... i know my moms email for her school lets her retract emails if she sent something to the wrong person or something like that which is a cool feature ...

normally you can only retract internal emails from and exchange server, not internet mail.

thunderbird has a return receipt function.

when you send one to your other account, does it prompt you to acknowledge the return receipt?

most mail clients you can go into option and tell it to always reply, ask you, always ignore.

just for grins, create a new user profile on your machine, log in as that user, setup email account then send one with read receipt.

nope i have never received a prompt, as of yet, when i open the email.

ill try the new user thing too

also, is thunderbird a good user friendly, and most importantly secure client? i have never even looked into it.

I like it a lot. I have all my personal accounts delivered to Thunderbird. I like it way better than OE. I haven't done any in depth study on the security. But I like its junk filter.

one thing I also like it that you can have thunderbird portable on your USB stick. which is nice you can have your full featured email with you on any computer and leave no footprint on their machine.

oh, wow, thats awesome. Is there a way to transfer all my old emails from OE to thunderbird though? i know you can import your bookmarks from IE to firefox so i am just curious if OR to thunderbird would work the same.

yes,
* Select Tools | Import... from the menu in Mozilla Thunderbird.
* Make sure Mail is selected.
* Click Next >.
* Highlight Outlook Express.
* Click Next > again.
* Now click Finish.

you can find step by step with pictures if you google it. but it's pretty staight forward.
