Ocean, Arctic Studies Show Global Warming Is Real
"The debate over whether or not there is a global warming signal is now over, at least for rational people"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A parcel of studies looking at the oceans and melting Arctic ice leave no room for doubt that it is getting warmer, people are to blame, and the weather is going to suffer, climate experts said on Thursday. New computer models that look at ocean temperatures instead of the atmosphere show the clearest signal yet that global warming is well underway, said Tim Barnett of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Speaking at an annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Barnett said climate models based on air temperatures are weak because most of the evidence for global warming is not even there. "The real place to look is in the ocean," Barnett told a news conference.

His team used millions of temperature readings made by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to calculate steady ocean warming. "The debate over whether or not there is a global warming signal is now over, at least for rational people," he said.

The report was published one day after the United Nations Kyoto Protocol took effect, a 141-nation environmental pact the United States government has spurned for several reasons, including stated doubts about whether global warming is occurring and is caused by people.

Good article Larry. There is a groundswell of nations across Europe who are concerned with the US's lack of participation on any of the negotations surrounding the Kyoto agreement. They feel that this agenda is so important that the US at least should be playing a more active part in all of this. It's hoped at the G8 summit in Scotland that discussions can take place for America to get more involved in something the rest of the G8 feels is so important for the well being of Mother Earth. :yesnod:

Even 30 years ago most scientists believed this was happening. I studied it extensively in my education toward a Geology degree. It has never ceased to amaze me how the debate has continued, despite overwhelming scientific evidence. I hope good thinking people begin to come around on this issue. This new compilation of studies, all pointing to the same conclusion, should help.

It's too bad that most everyone thinks of themselves first (IMHO greedof the western world) instead of the planet. It would be nice to see the politicians and the constituents look a bit deeper. Without Mother Earth we would be in deep doo-doo. :no Ya right, as if that would happen. :whistle
