Here's how you can remove those shortcut arrows from your desktop icons in Windows XP.

1. Start regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTlnkfile
3. Delete the IsShortcut registry value.

You may need to restart Windows XP.

I dont like to use tweaking programmes at all. I was hoping this registry hack would enable me to get rid of the shortcut arrow icons.

Is there no other way of doing this..?

Not that I am aware of. I'm sure there is some registry key you have to change, but I'm not sure of it. Why not just download TweakUI from MS, change this one setting and unistall it?
