Real-Time Strategy

War and Peace 1796-1815

The turn of the Eighteen Century was quite a tricky time, with near-constant wars, invasions, and cut-throat diplomacy making for some pretty rapid changes in the international political and geographical landscape. You can experience this heady global confusion for yourself in War and Peace, which gives you the chance to control one of six major nations against this historically accurate background.

You're supposed to expand your empire by balancing high-level international diplomacy with ordering troops around on the ground. Unfortunately, managing things on the ground is made difficult by poor graphics and the limited view offered by the slow moving camera. And on the international scale it's difficult to strike up relationships of any kind thanks to the huge amount of time and expense required to generate the requisite bargaining chips.

The balance of international power is pleasingly nebulous, but you've got to change the game speed every few minutes in order to cope, and even if you do manage to engage in battle, the units look dreadful and are difficult to control. The concept of War and Peace is intriguing, but it's so difficult to engage with that there's little motivation to play on.
