Problem with Office 2007

Postby phileysmiley on Tue May 23, 2006 7:07 pm

I had Office 2003 on my laptop. I just installed Office 2007. I selected the "upgrade" option during installation. Now I have both 2003 and 2007 on my computer. I was never instructed to uninstall 2003 and installing 2007 obviously didn't "upgrade" 2003 to 2007. So I have both.

Now, when I open a Word document, it still opens in 2003. Unless I already have Word 2007 open. If I have it running, then I open a doc, it will open in 2007. But if I just click on a doc to open it, it still opens in 2003.

How do I get Word documents to open by default in 2007?

By the way, this does NOT happen with Excel files. They open now by default in 2007 and not 2003. I haven't tried it with Powerpoint yet.

right click on the document file, go to the open with> and choose program. After the choose program window opens, find word 2007 and select that as the program to open the file with, and make sure that the checkbox for always opening files of that type with this program is checked, and then it should always open documents in word 2007

There is only one listing for Word.

click on browse, go to program files and there should be an OFFICE12 folder, probably within the Microsoft Office folder, find winword.exe in the office 12 folder and select that and it should add it as a program to open the file with.

ROFL I was just going to post back -- I did that, and it still opened in 2003. I browsed to the Office 12 folder, selected WINWORD from within that folder, and it still opened in 2003.

umm, yeah, not really sure what to do with that then. Sounds like something is messed up with office there. Not really sure how to fix it either. maybe try a repair installation of both?

Well, my Office 2003 CD is at home (I'm at WinHEC). I only have the 2007 CD here.

Try uninstalling both and then reinstall Office 2007. I think that will save you a lot of hassles, or try going to Tools>Folder options>File types in Windows Explorer and then scroll down to DOC and change "Opens with" to WINWORD.EXE in \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12.

This should work but then Office 2003 won't open word docs anymore.

:bashhead: duh, why would anyone carry and office 2003 cd around with them. I'll try to duplicate this tonight and figure out a way to fix it without the office 2003 cd, no promises though. Is there a way for you to ask the Office 2007 team what might be going on? Not sure if they gave the attendees a way to report problems or not.

Oh no no...no biggie. Not everyone knows where I am.

I just got back from the evening activities and the "Ask The Experts" sessions, and as it turns out there is nobody here at all from Office. They acted like I was silly asking since this is WinHEC. Only "Windows" people are here. Yet Bill announced the release of Office 2007, it was handed out to everyone in the Press Room, many of us installed it, and now that we have problems there is nobody here to help. One would think there would be one MS person here who knows something about it, especially since they handed it out today.

At any rate, "off the record" I was told that it's probably a bug.
