I save a document for school on Office 2007 Beta and wanted to see if it open on the schools computer as they have Offce 2002/XP but no luck as the document format is a DOCX and not a DOC. I havent try it on Office 2003 yet to see if it open on there.

there is a program that adds the docx format to 2003, but I haven't seen it available for beta 2 yet. It won't open unless you have that isntalled though as the docx is a different document format compared to doc in how it saves the file info. You'll have to save the Office beta 2 documents in either PDF format or doc format if you want to take them to non-Office 2007 computers and view them.

Well I got Office 2007 Beta 2 to install along side 2003 except for Outlook which I decided to use the 2007 version. Also the first time I started Word 2003 it installed some thing automatically and when it opened I went in and looked at the formats I could save as and docx was in there as one of the options near the bottom.

I accidently did update the first time and it messed it up and I wasted an hour fixing it. Then I clicked to customize the second time and selected to keep my 2003 install as well.

I was able to activate without any problems at all.

Maybe I need to completely uninstall Office everything and try to reinstall?

Okay guys, here is what we found out.

1) It did install correctly. If you install Office 2007 on top of Office 2003 and choose "upgrade," you SHOULD end up with both 03 and 07 on your machine. You should have 2 sets of shortcuts. One will not replace the other. This is what happened to all the others who installed it that way.

2) The documents created in 03 are in doc format (as you know). There is a new file format for 07, which is docx. What happens is this:

a) Documents created in 03 will still open in 03 by default, because they are docs and cannot trigger 07 to open since they are a different format. That's why they would not open in 07.

b) Documents created in 07 will open in 07 by default, because they are docx and cannot open in 03.

c) NOW, the reason why docs WILL open in 07 IF you open 07 first is because 07 will automatically convert doc to docx. Then once it has converted a doc to docx, it will open in 07 by default.

Eventually, all your documents will open in 07 if you follow the above procedure. Of course, you can always uninstall 03 if you want.

We still have some testing to do to make sure this happens for everyone consistently, so I will post back if the above turns out to be questionable.

I did the upgrade on my installation, it stated that it woudl automatically uninstall Office 03 also. I did the upgrae and now my 03 is gone. Now I'm really confused, I had some extra Office 03 icons/shortcuts created before the 07 install and tried to boot 03 afterwards. Said it coudl not find the exe file.

This just baffles me. The first thing I did was to look at MS' info regarding whether or not one had to remove 2003 first. I expected that I would have to. But it said nothing. Then I installed off the CD, I chose "upgrade," I expected it to say something about Office 2003, but it didn't. After installation was complete, both were there and shortcuts to both were there. Neither installation affected the other.

It is a Beta, after all. Perhaps it's just a bug?
