Fitting laptop RAM

Fitting laptop RAM

Postby Chippychap » Tue Nov 19, 2013 3:44 pm

Hi Guys, I've been fitting and swapping RAM into desktops and laptops for some years and thought I knew my way around the subject until today.
I have an old Advent 7086 laptop where the max RAM is 1Gb, currently running 512Kb.
Saw a 1Gb on fleabay for a good price so sent for it.
It looks absolutely identical except that the "missing tooth" slot near one end of the connectors is about a mm out. It doesn't fit. Is it just a cheap copy or were some of the differences that small?
Thank you

I Believe they are all the same or should be unless your laptop will only use proprietary parts, like some Packard bell used to be

I Googled the specs of the module I bought

"Specifications
Product Description Integral memory - 1GB - DIMM 200-PIN - DDR2
Storage Capacity 1GB
Upgrade Type Generic
Form Factor DIMM 200-PIN
Memory Speed 667 MHz (PC5300)
Technology DDR2 SDRAM
Data Integrity Check Non-ECC
Features Un-buffered"

So, if the speed is wrong do the modules physically not fit?

Does the inclusion of the word "integral" in the specs denote anything relevant here?

Which bit makes it not fit?
It was a snap decision to buy at a discount
