Can't get laptop online

Can't get laptop online

Postby Chippychap » Tue Nov 05, 2013 4:18 pm

Hi guys, just bought an old Advent 7086 laptop which I am trying to get online.
I use a BT Homehub for my broadband but the previous owner used a dial-up modem.
The two screens on the taskbar showing internet connection has a red cross through it.
I disabled the modem in Device Manager and connected via an ethernet cable to my hub
Device manager says ethernet card enabled but I am faced with the old dial up "redialling in 59 seconds" box.
No matter how often I click on "never dial a connection" boxes it want to dial up and just says it cannot connect.
TBH this palaver is from years ago and it is freaking me out
Can anyone suggest a strategy?
I have been through many set up a connection wizards and must have chosen most options by now.
Thank you.

Maybe reset it to factory settings (FSs) & start from there.

If XP is installed you'll need a ton of updates, hopefully SP3 is already in the FSs.

It is asking to update with SP3 but can't get online.
I do have a desktop with a rewriter if that would help?
I gather XP was pre plug and play as I can't use an external mouse, and they don't come with CD's any more?
ps thank you for the link, am reading it now.
Resetting seems easy but not sure if I need a windows/any other disc
Sorry to be high maintenance. :embarrassed:

Maybe updating the Ethernet driver would help, if you can figure out which one you have, go to the laptop manufacturers website and look for the drivers you need, and burn them to disk with your desktop
