Help with partitioning and new Mobo W7
Hi Guys, Santa left me a new PC, stingy 'erbert made it a relatively low spec but cutback I guess.
It had a 1Tb HD with no OS and using the MoBo graphics/sound ect.
To light it up I installed an old drive with W7 on it just to get going so I now have a 150Gb with OS and a 1Tb blank.
I then installed W7 on the big drive as my old storage drive needs to have its files, music movies etc installed on new machine.
Basically I have now a dual boot system.
Will take out small drive, put storage drive in temporarily and then boot with big drive OS and move stuff across onto new PC and then put storage back into old PC to allow it to be sold.....And breathe.
After going around the houses my question is instead of having an OS on a full 1TB drive I thought I would partition the OS into a minimum space and keep stored files seperate.
I see terms like "Shrink volume etc and am afraid of...................everything really.
If I keep the OS on a small partition then it keeps them and files apart and would allow for dual boot after small herd drive then returns so I would have a 150 and a partitioned 1Tb
Sorry to be long winded guys.
I would be using Partition Magic or anything you suggest.
Bless you for your patience

Re: Help with partitioning and new Mobo W7
I use the windows tools to partition my drives now days.
working off the top of my head...
In W7, rt. clk >Computer & choose Disk Management.
Rt. clk the drive you want to shrink & choose shrink volume from the (rt clk) menu.
Just follow the steps, use the defaults as a guide.
After you are done shrinking it you'll probably have to (quick) format it, use the default drive letter & (when done) rt clk on the new partition & make it active.

So will that leave me with the OS in a small partition and the remainder as another partition?
Thank you
Thank you

yes, I sometimes defrag the hdd first too.
You'll have to see what space you have to work with when setting up the shrink volume. You can check-out the first few steps & quit w/o any damage to see what you have to work with.

Hi shredder, just an update.
I have gone from 1 drive to about 5 and back to 2 which is what I was after.
Thank you for giving me the confidence.

Re: Help with partitioning and new Mobo W7
Wow good job working w/ Computer Management tools
I am glad I could help.
On my main rig I have several partitions w/ various OSs on them & a local storage partition too.
But I also have a 1TB separate SATA Storage (only) drive just to be safe.
On a store bought PC w/ a weak power supply one may need to figure out how much expansion they can do w/o overloading the ps.

Re: Help with partitioning and new Mobo W7
I have done things multiple times, and I mean at least half a dozen clean installs to get me my current one, out of ignorance but have learned so much in a head-banging sort of way. I went from one drive to 5 partitions back to one as I kept cocking up shrinking and enlarging a partition and finally realising that, sometimes one is best
Thank you again
Thank you again
