I hadn't built myself a new system in quite a while, so I did with what I think are top drawer components. I used the ASUS Maximimus V Gene MB, the Intel I-5 3570 CPU, 4X8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600 Ram, a Seagate 1TB-SATA 6.0Gb HD, a eVGA GTX 550 Ti graphics card, a Thermaltake 750 Watt PS, loaded Windows 7 X64 SP1, pretty much what is in my signature.

It blue screened trying to do the Windows Update, it won't do the Windows assesment in "System" (which I really don't care, but it indicates to me at least there is a problem) I took it all apart cleaned the CPU and applied Artic Silver this time............... pretty much the same thing. I have tried running it with half the Ram, and 1 stick of Ram, tried a whole different video card (ASUS EAH3650) same thing.

I use ASUS boards a lot.
I have noticed w/ my RAM that it doesn’t appear in the BIOS what the RAM speed is supposed to be, so I adjusted it up, that does cause a problem after POST sometimes & I just atrl+alt+delete it & its fine.

NTS; I do use the ASUS support for reference if others are having problems, I don’t see yours though.

no matter what I do, It won't complete the Windows Update, it downloads the updates, it starts updating, gets through some of them and then it appears to hang or stall and then finally it blue screens, once I noticed it said a needed file was either missing or corrupt, except for the message it does the same thing when doing the Windows assessment, it starts running through the assorted video tests and what not and then hangs up and finally blue screens.

Other than that the system is running fine, so I have the Windows update set to "check for updates but let me choose when to download and install them"

it did update some before this started, so maybe when SP2 comes out or when I have some extra time to update one update at a time I will give it a go LOL

I am such a dummy. it has been so long since I built a new system, I completely forgot about BIOS update, can't wait till I get home to see if that helps

I just love the technical information supplied by windows solutions. since my system shut down, rebooted unexpectedly I received the infamous windows solutions message.
in the technical information, they state they don't know exactly what the cause was, but they suggest it was 1 of the following,
RAM
system board
power supply
or the CPU
pretty much the entire system, except the hard drive and video card.

I did update the BIOS, and got it to update, 8 more of the 18 Windows Updates that were left, by updating them 1 at a time, the other 10 still fail

Yes to the question about the drivers. I think this weekend, I am going to create another partition, and reinstall it all again since I have the Bios updated to see how it goes.

Found time last night to shrink partition, and reinstall Windows, worked perfect, updated and all, so tonight I'll get rid of first install.

Im thinking one or so Windows updates snuck in before or during install of chipset and other drivers off MB CD

I wonder about installing the chipset drivers now w/ newer OSs.
Yesterday I installed a copy of Win8 PRO x86 RTM on a new partition on the main rig.

I checked the device mgr & see no errors., incl there were (2) entries for USB 3.0 Host controller there already (microsoft).
The names don't exactly match the chipset USB 3.0 controller driver in Win7 though.
Win8 has "eXtensible" added to the description.

The LAN worked w/o adding any chipset drivers too.
