Microsoft CEO Ballmer's last stand: Liveblog from CES
By Mary Jo Foley | January 9, 2012, 8:38am PST
Summary: Come back at 6:30 pm PT/9:30 pm ET on January 9 for ZDNet’s live blog of CEO Steve Ballmer’s last CES keynote address.
January 9 is the last time that Microsoft will be keynoting the Consumer Electronics Show.
To commemorate the occasion, my ZDNet colleague Ed Bott and I will be “live” blogging the event. (I put “live” in quotation marks here, as neither of us will be in the keynote hall. Bott is at CES; I’m not. But we both figure blogging in real time will be more realistic if we aren’t attempting to do so from inside.)
CEO Steve Ballmer’s last CES keynote is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. PT/9:30 p.m. ET tonight. If you want to watch a live stream of the keynote, you can do so on Facebook or on Microsoft’s Web site.

Re: Windows 8 - New information
Not much really new from Ballmer concerning W8, just confirmation of the previous speculation about late February for Beta. hmmm, mind you, is this the first time that MS have officially designated the new OS as "Windows 8" instead of claiming it was just a codename ?
That the Windows Store will be launched at the same time as the Beta is interesting, but then again I really can't see myself using it...

Ditto on that Julian.
I hadn't heard that Tablets would work w/ not just ARM but x86 (CPUs) too, suppose that makes sense though.

aaaah, it's a major selling point that this is a massive step towards phones, tablets, laptops, and PCs all using the same OS, instead of the current industry policy of providing stripped-down versions for the less powerful gizmos.
This is actually a natural development on the basis of the (unreleased, internal, but publicly demo'd) Windows Core tech, which is reportedly a Windows that needs only 256K RAM, and which all current public Windows versions W7 onwards are apparently based on ... (it's also IMO the reason why W8 can need fewer resources than W7)
I've been anticipating a development like this for some time now, but it's still exciting to see it come to fruition

Getting Android apps to run on Windows 8 is actually very cool !!!

At the 2012 Consumer Electronic Show here today, BlueStacks revealed a functional demo that runs Android apps of all kinds on Windows 8. This follows last year's debut of the software and release as a rough alpha for Windows 7, but it comes with a piece of unexpected news. The software maker has been in talks with hardware manufacturers to ship the program preinstalled on Windows 8. A beta of the Windows 7 version was also cagily given a release date of sometime before the second quarter of 2012.
BlueStacks CEO Rosen Sharma, spoke confidently about the impact that his software will have. "The Metro UI is beautiful, but the number one thing Windows 8 is missing is apps," he said. "This changes all that." BlueStacks claimed in the press release for the announcement that its software "makes creating mobile apps for the Windows 8 platform unnecessary," a gutsy claim for a program that has yet to have even one stable version on the market.
As you can see in our First Look video above or in the official BlueStacks promo, the Windows 8 integration works with the Metro interface, creating tiles for Android apps that look and feel like they're Metro apps. It effectively eliminates the concern that Windows 8 won't have enough apps to compete with iOS and Android by bringing the entire Android library to the system. The software will support both Metro and traditional windowed modes.

Bing Page w/ Win8 (beta?) Fish

Microsoft Bing page tips off new Windows 8 Consumer Preview
Microsoft has already cooked up a special Bing page tempting users to check out its upcoming Windows 8 "Consumer Preview."
The first clue is the video of a betta fish swimming from one edge of the screen to the other. Thought of as Microsoft's mascot for beta versions of new operating systems, that particular fish swam its way onto the desktop of the beta for Windows 7 in 2009.
But other more obvious clues are the hot spots and links scattered across the screen that refer specifically to Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Since the page is still a work in progress, most of the links don't yet work. The only two that do bring you to a page for developers eager to create Metro-based apps and another one for Microsoft's Building Windows 8 blog.
Due to launch by the end of the month, the Consumer Preview is Microsoft's newly-christened name for the beta of Windows 8, a follow-up to the Developer Preview unveiled last September. But the Developer Preview has triggered some complaints and concerns among the Microsoft faithful.
PC users in particular have been jarred by the emphasis on the Metro UI and touch-based devices, with some feeling that the new OS is less friendly to those relying on mouse and keyboard. Microsoft has been open about the changes in Windows 8 though its Building Windows 8 blog series and at the same time responsive to certain criticism.

Re: Windows 8 - New information
Well, the Beta will be out in a few days anyway, which will be fun
People are currently making noise about how the Windows Start button/orb does not appear on the taskbar in leaked screenies of the 8220 build of the "Windows Consumer Preview" (which it seems will be the name of the W8 Beta) -- but a little investigation shows that it's actually still there, just invisible !! (I've no idea if that's just a bug in the build, or if Microsoft is actually moving towards ditching the Start button)

Re: Windows 8 - New information
.
Microsoft revealed today that it plans to launch the highly anticipated "Consumer Preview" version of Windows 8 on February 29th. The company will hold an event at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona on February 29th to launch the Windows 8 Consumer Preview between 3PM and 5PM (CET). The unusual choice of venue (a cellphone conference) could hint at the company's plans for the future of Windows 8 and Windows Phone.
