Windows 8 Build 7955 Install & Testing

I did a b7959 VHD install on a VHD I created in Computer Management.
The install took around 38 minutes.
Neither my LAN nor Chipset drivers will install.
About Windows says Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, version 6.2 + (Build...).

First impression: Think I'll just dump it

So far I have seen 3 different 7955 builds out there & a 4th one coming soon.

I extracted the .ISO's to look at the dates to try to figure out which is the cleanest.
They all are dated all over the place, probably because the Win7 setup was used on the first leak.
Now someone is claiming theirs has the original Windows 8 setup/installer.

The date on the build is 110228 (2/28/2011)
1st leak = 5/9/11 & 9/23/10
2nd leak = all 9/23/10 dates
3rd leak = 5/9/11 & 3/25/11
4the leak = ?

Last night I tried installing 7955 w/ the Original installer this time.
I did an upgrade install from within my last install of 7955 by double clicking on the “installprep.exe” inside the Sources folder on the DVD.
It had a few hiccups but finished fine.

I used a Windows 7 beta key again.

Here are some screenys of the Install part.

Inside the $WINDOWS.~BT/ Sources folder is a copy of the installprep.exe.

This AM I tested the new Windows 8 “History Vault”, located in All Control Panel Items.
The backup took about 2 hours to complete & chewed-up around 800 MB of space; the restore of 1- folder (2.17 MB) was completed successfully in a flash.

Here are some screenys.

I chose C:\ to use

Remember the old tweak that added the .. Explorer Bar?

I found a files + reg tweak that gives a enhanced Explorer Ribbon now… much nicer.

It did take a while to get the tweak to work as the instructions are a bit weak.

Tonight I formatted a 4 GB Flash Drive to the new Protogon format to have a look.
My Flash Drive was a FAT32 format before formatting it, the format took 6 minutes.

Command prompt w/ code & progress

Compare Flash Drive Properties before & after Protogon format

I tried shrinking & creating another partition today.
Formatted it in the new PROtogon file system & installed Windows 8 build 7955 x86 on it.

Did a custom install & didn't format the partition during the install prep.

After the install Windows 8 had formatted the partition anyway to a NTFS file system :x
The install worked & I found out some more information, but the test failed.

Very interesting JD. If I'm not mistaken builds including and after 8000 will be the first beta builds. I'm guessing that the move from alpha to beta will see a lot of the sort of issue you mention above removed.

Remember how XP could be installed in either FAT 32 or NTFS? I wonder if the same will happen with Win 8, NTFS a new file system?
