Windows 8 Build 7850 Install & Testing

Windows 8 Build 7850 Install & Testing

Postby shreader » Wed Apr 13, 2011 12:52 am

Today an early build of Windows 8 leaked online.

The leaked build is: 6.1.7850.0.winmain_win8m1.100922-1508_x86fre_client-enterprise_en-us.iso

It appears to be the last M1 build (on the list I looked at) before MS started the M2 (6.2) phase.
I first tried installing it in Window 7 VPC & that failed after a couple of VPC restarts so I tried again but in VMware workstation 7, that worked & took 21 minutes to hit the desktop.

Here are some screenshots.

Great Daniel, the more, the more fun ^*^

So far I have managed to break Win8 twice w/ a black screen & stuck courser arrow.

I am just leaving it running now & not restarting it until I get plenty of screenys.
I am planning on installing 8 on real hardware soon, my plan is to set the BIOS back to 9/23/2010 first then do a keyless install.

It somewhat surprises me that MS is still starting off using a Windows 7 build to construct Windows 8. You would think they'd learned that lesson about starting from semi-scratch and building from the ground up. But I guess you have to start somewhere.

From what I read this leaked copy is one of those taken off a VHD & converted to a .ISO.

it looks incredibly like someone's packed a VHD into a WIM and dropped it in an ISO - though the setup.exe and sources folder are the original, it has a 7600 boot.wim. Common with someone who's recreated an ISO from a VHD...

It's the real one, the WIM is 100% original, just the installer come from Win7RTM.

I'm going to format Win7 Starter away on a test rig & install it there.

Yep the date of the build is 9/22/2010 & it supposidly expires on 3/5/2011, I read.

I agree John, it freeked me out when it started installing and said Windows 7, My first thought was bummer it is nothing but another build or something else of Windows 7, I thought maybe it would at least say just the build number or something simple not even mentioning Windows 7

Mine installed without a hitch, no blue screens.

Trouble with installing on a laptop is the default setting for power options wants to turn everything off after a bit, it was a little different in the settings for power options than I remember, but I got em LOL

The install did realize it was a laptop, since it has the setting for connecting to a projector right on the start menu

I guess we only get 3 days with this, automatic activation in 3 days it says, under "System", what we do then reinstall (-:

Also in the bottom right corner mine says "Evaluation copy then the build number", not what yours says JD

Did you get your internet working?

I had a good clean install on the test rig but wasn’t happy w/ not getting the internet working so I tried a upgrade install from Win7 Ult, booting from the OS, that failed rather fast so I tried some registry tweaks to make it look like Win7 Enterprise or Business, both those upgrades failed too @ the same place.

1 of the error messages said:
The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete the upgrade.

So I tried a clean (keyless) install of Vista Enterprise SP2, then upgrading that to 8, that failed 25 minutes into the install after the last reboot.

Here is a photo I took of the Windows 8 Eula that only shows-up when doing a upgrade install.
