<span class="text18 bold">Vipre Antivirus + Antispyware</span>

With the evolution of more and more viruses there is also more companies getting into the antivirus market. One of the new comers to the market is Sunbelt-Software Vipre antivirus with antispyware built in.

Test System: ASUS P5B-Plus MB, Intel Q6600 Dual, 2 gig OCZ DDR2 800, EVGA 320 meg 8800 GTX.

<span class="text16 bold">Installation</span>
The installation was straight forward. Vipre was installed on a Vista Ultimate 32 bit computer for this testing. Below you will see several pictures taken step by step installation.
<a href="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=2637"><img src="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_thumbnail.php?pic_id=2637"></a> <a href="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=2644"><img src="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_thumbnail.php?pic_id=2644"></a>

After the installation of the software and you click finish you will be ask to restart your computer.
<a href="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=2645"><img src="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_thumbnail.php?pic_id=2645"></a>

Once the computer restarts you will be ask a series of screen questions. When you get to this point it is best to just click Next all the way through (last screen will be finish) until you get to the screen below.
<a href="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=2656"><img src="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_thumbnail.php?pic_id=2656"></a>

From the main over view windows I clicked on updates and did a check for updates to update the definition files.
<a href="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=2657"><img src="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_thumbnail.php?pic_id=2657"></a> <a href="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=2658"><img src="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_thumbnail.php?pic_id=2658"></a>

Once everything is updated, a manual scan is performed. The quick scan was efficient and quick. It did find a few cookies on mine.
<a href="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=2659"><img src="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_thumbnail.php?pic_id=2659"></a>

With the Vipre open, you can also click on the tabs to see Scan, Manage, and Tools tabs. As you can see from the screen shots, there are more options other than just antivirus scanning. It seems that Vipre has been doing their homework and are providing a very well laid out and useful tool to the customers. These picture will also be referenced within the review.
<a href="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=2660"><img src="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_thumbnail.php?pic_id=2660"></a> <a href="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=2661"><img src="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_thumbnail.php?pic_id=2661"></a> <a href="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=2662"><img src="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_thumbnail.php?pic_id=2662"></a>

<span class="text16 bold">Review</span>
The Manage tab actually provide useful information and tools for the users. Under the Manage tab, you will have the options to view the history of the software, work with Quarantine, work with Always Blocked, work with Always Allowed and scheduled scan. All are straight forward and very easy to work with.

The Tool Tab provides the following System Tools: Secure File Eraser, History Cleaner, PC Explorer. The secure file eraser and history cleaner were straight forward. The PC Explorer gave access to everything running. Although the PC Explorer might be handy to some "expert" users, in the hands of "novice" users, it could be dangerous.

The default scan time during setup is 1:00 am and does not give you an option to change it. You will have to change it via the Manage tab, view schedules or click on Scheduled Scans on the Overview tab and then follow the instructions for setting up scans.

The Quick scan was actually very quick and did not lag my computer down at all. Very nice and it found a couple of bad cookies. The Deep Scan did take a little longer of course but still yet it was efficient and I could still move around my computer without much problems. It actually found an unidentified back door Trojan and a Trojan down loader that was actually a false positive.
<a href="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=2663"><img src="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_thumbnail.php?pic_id=2663"></a>

The scan tab will give you three choices of a scan, Quick, Deep System, and Custom. You will notice at the bottom of the screen that you have scan options. This allows you to setup the options for each of the three scan options and is very easy to setup.
<a href="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=2660"><img src="http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/album_thumbnail.php?pic_id=2660"></a>

Although this is a new antivirus program to the market, it seems they have been doing some research. They have come up with a program that is easy to setup and runs efficient. For a novice user, the program should be installed and pretty much left alone. An expert user might could tune it a little and make it run better.
Only time will tell how well the detection engine is and what it will catch. I did notice that definition updates are not applied daily like we have seen in another program. Also while the definitions were being applied, there was a dramatic slowdown in the operation of Vista; so beware for the gamers that will be playing a game while definitions are being updated.
As in other antivirus programs they do offer an Enterprise Edition and is fully integrable with their CounterSpy antispyware enterprise edition.

If the product had been on the market longer and proven itself, it would have received a 9/10. Even at this stage, Vipre is still a better antivirus program than those three top leaders; you know the ones you see on every shelf of a store; starts with a "M" and "N" and "T". Within a years time, this should be one of the top contenders for an antivirus program. For the price it is definitely better than the free antivirus programs offered.

I've been listening/following Steve Gibson on SecurityNow regarding AV software and for the most part, I agree with him;particularly with respect to his description of AV software in general -It is reactive at best; however, some AV programs do this with better results than others............ and this one is one of the good exceptions it appears.

They recently released a new version of VIPRE and it's been bought by GFI, it's much better now and faster! Just thought I'd say.
