Sandybridge Chipset Design Flaw and Recall-

Re: Sandybridge Chipset Design Flaw and Recall-

I'm now taking the hang-onto-it & return it after the new MB's are released route.

I found a site w/ around 55 pages of posts last night w/ people giving up info on my MB & how ASUS handles this sort of thing.

They offer a thing called ASUS Advanced Replacement for up to a year after purchase.

I'll just use the SATA 3, 6GB/s ports, as from what I read they aren't affected.
According to my MB manual there are 2- Marvel & 2- Intel + 2 - external JMB ports SATA III ports on it.

I only need 3 internal to roll, The SATA 3 posts are compatible w/ SATA 2 hardware I also read.

SOoo I'll finish building the rig & wait for the new boards to arrive then RMA it, the ASUS ARS page says they'll send the new board (one has to give ASUS their CC # first) & they give you 14 days to return the old-busted one.
That sounds pretty fair.

The advanced replacement requires you to put up a deposit (usually the cost of the board) until they receive and process the returned board, unless they have changed their policy.

Thats alright, I wonder if I could get a upgraded board for a few bux more.

MC sent me this email today re: this problem

An Important Announcement regarding Intel(r) Series 6 Chipsets

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Intel has recently identified an issue with their 6 series chipsets,
which are used with all their 2nd generation Core processors
(code-named Sandy Bridge). This is a potentially serious issue, but it
should not affect your data, just your system's performance. Intel believes
that consumers can continue to use their systems with confidence, while
working with their computer manufacturer for a permanent solution.

However, some users may see degradation in the performance of SATA
devices attached to the system, whether internal or external (such as hard
drives and DVD drives). Intel is not aware of any end-user who has seen this
issue yet, but they expect it to affect a significant percentage of users
eventually, and to worsen over a three year period.

Please be assured that Micro Center will stand behind every customer who
purchased a system or a motherboard from us that features this chipset.
Intel has already made the necessary change in the manufacturing process
to correct the error, and properly functioning replacements will be available
in approximately 8 weeks.

To minimize the disruption to you, we suggest that you continue to use your
system until replacement parts are available. At that time, we will contact
you with instructions regarding how to get your motherboard replaced or your
system repaired.

PLEASE NOTE: There is no problem with the Intel 2nd Generation Core Processors themselves.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused by this issue,
and our assurance that we will keep you informed of any further developments.

Last night I finished installing the parts & fired-up the SandyBridge PC... it booted to the BIOS, I corrected the date/time, slipped in the drive the Win7 x64 DVD, exited the BIOS, pressed the F8 key during the post screen & installed Win7, in 12.5 minutes I hit the desktop.

No problems so far w/ anything, once I installed some drivers ^*^

Checked the perfornance rating & was a bit disappointed, suppose I need some newer drivers.

Great that you got it going shreader! ^*^ Enjoy! :yesnod:

Seems like my PSU failed again, 6 month old Corsair CX600. I subbed an X2 mobo in there and all fans/lights were on but no video signal, same as the Sandy Bridge(SB). I then subbed my old abused Antec Earthwatts 500W and the X2 booted just fine, unfortunately the Antec won't even power up the fans on the SB mobo so I'm stuck with some good but useless H/W for a few weeks.

Strange that the PSU worked fine with my Q6600 machine just before I switched it to the SB mobo. It's not as if I'm taxing the thing as I only had a 9800GT hooked up.

Anyways, MSI (like most if not all makers) will issue a prepaid label to ship the board back and then send me a new one after registering. They say end March/April but unless they fly the boards in I can't see that happening.(read expensive) Maybe they'll just refurb the boards with the new chips and charge Intel for that work.

Thanks augie :yesnod:
Sometimes early adapters have to pay a additional price in difficulties, sorry to hear about your ups-n-downs w/ this rig.

RE: Power supplies.
My previous rig I got the PS from NewEgg (bad idea) & it arrived DOA w/ broken fan blades.
SOoo I got a this tester @ Fry's, cheap but works.

For this SB rig I just bought a new RocketFish, 900 w PS off ebay, luckily it arrived in working condition.
Once I compile the SB specs list I'll post it.

Edit: my new SB rig still does have some glitches in the memory frequency (sb 1600 MHz) w/ a black (boot) screen when I set the BIOS to that.

I received a email from MC today.

An important announcement regarding your Intel I7 2600K, I7 2600, I5 2500K, or I5 2400 Processor (“Sandy Bridge”) motherboard purchase.
Beginning March 3rd, we will start to receive inventory from several manufacturers for the next 2-3 weeks. Inventory however will be limited until early April. We wanted you to be one of the first to know.
There are several options open to you. So that we may better serve you, please complete a very short questionnaire concerning which options you prefer. After completing the questionnaire you will be taken to a page with further details. See your local Micro Center store with questions.
Thank you for your business and your patience through this extremely rare situation.
Please click the link below to be taken to the questionnaire.
Your Micro Center Team

*Last 2 questionnaire items:

Yes, I want a new one as soon as they are available
X - No, I need one fairly soon, but I can wait until there is a better supply available
No need immediately; let me know when they are generally available

6) Would you be willing to wait until April 15th or May 15th to receive a replacement board, if we offered you a $25 Micro Center gift card?

X - Yes, but only to April 15th
Yes, until May 15th
No

**I'm still hoping to get a deluxe board when available.
X - are my choices above.

ASUS shipped my replacement (B3 Revision) board Monday & it arrived today, tomorrow I'll switch it out w/ the B2 I'm using now, hopefully I wont have to reinstall Windows 7 again, I'll do a complete BU tonight just in-case.

ASUS included a complimentary HS-101 notebook headset, "as a token of our appreciation", that was a nice touch.

How is your MSI board replacement going Algis?

Slipped the new board in the PC today & it only took about 5 hours incl. repacking the old board for shipping back to ASUS.

The biggest PITA was getting the (recycled) heat sink to snap/seat in the MB holes.
The old HS/CPU compound came off easily w/ 91% isopropyl alcohol, so that was a breeze.

I did have to reactivate Windows 7 though.
So I am back in action, hopefully for another 2± years until the next replacement PC will be due.

Good job JD ^*^

I was saving up to do a new system for myself and then my wifes car had to have some work done, so now I am starting to save again. Just have to plug away with the system I have, the old reliable Q6600 on the P5Q Deluxe (-:
