Will my LH-20A1H read dual layer DVD's
Hi Guys, My DVD burner (LH-20A1H) says "DVD+R DL on the fascia.
I took that to read that it will handle dual Layer DVD's.
Upshot is that I have been sent a DVD and me PC does not like it at all.
The burning light stays on and the whole lot freezes until the DVD is removed.
Device Manager says that the software is up to date.
Is the beastie capable of reading DL or do I need to update to a different ROM drive?

According to the Lite-On site the LH-20A1H can read dual layer DVD's:

I'd check on a number of things, including the settings of the IDE jumper at the back of the drive where you plug the cables in - is it set to slave or master? Is the cable plugged-in in the middle of the cable (slave) or at the end - (master)?
Did you get a driver install CD and install the drivers from that?

Hi Graham, jumper set to Master.
There is only one drive anyway.
I've D/L the latest firmware.
Thanks for your help Graham.
Have a great weekend

No it's still not reading dual layer DVDs, have tried several and it just freezes.
On my PC the, got to be carefull how I phrase this cos I am not mega PC literate, Hard drives ase SATA ie the thick red cable.
The drive is ATA with a ribbon lead and a power lead, both leads with spare plugs.
The pc was built by a toppish company.
Thinking of just getting a spare DVD/CD ROM on the spare connectors and set it as a Slave.
Only problem I have is that I have never bought a ROM drive for reading Dual layer stuff so not sure what to look for.
If it mentions "DL" ANYWHERE in the specs does it mean it will read 'em?
Don't need it to be a burner because I've got one.
Plan "B" was to delete the burner and make it find a new driver on reboot
So little time and so many windows the PC could go through.

Yeah try to delete the DVD drive in Device Manager and then reboot so that it is installed from scratch. Did you get any driver software with the drive? If so, then install that before you delete the drive.
Re: Will my LH-20A1H read dual layer DVD's
By the way Ken, does the drive read ordinary DVD's OK? If so, then it might well be that the DL DVD you are trying to play is faulty.
Re: Will my LH-20A1H read dual layer DVD's
Ordinary Cds DVDs OK, burning OK just won't read the D/L.
Tried several but result the same.
Have reinstalled the drivers which include an online update feature and still nothing.
Are all ROM drives capable of being connected via SATA OR the ribbon cable or are they totally different animals?
Thanks Graham

Re: Will my LH-20A1H read dual layer DVD's
It's generally either SATA or IDE - least I've never heard of one that can use both. If it's a new drive, I'd return it to the supplier for replacement. It actually seems like quite an old drive as it only mentioned compatibility with Windows 2000 and XP in the specifications. Which operating system are you using it on?
Re: Will my LH-20A1H read dual layer DVD's
It's about three years old so no hope there.
I run it with W7 Ultimate.
When I try to load the latest downloaded firmware I get.......
Which seems to contradict itself.
