Test install of Ubuntu 10.10 RC on VMware

Test install of Ubuntu 10.10 RC on VMware

Postby shreader » Fri Oct 08, 2010 4:10 am

After reading this PRO News Story Is Ubuntu 10.10 yet another chance to ditch Windows?
I decided it was about time to give Ubuntu a try.
So I created a 20GB Virtual (VMware) disk , allocated 512 MB of Ram & installed it there.

The install took 21 minutes from starting the OS install to hitting the desktop.

This OS does run quite nice & comes w/ a lot of built-in software, incl. a few games even.
I have been waiting for the Open Source Operating Systems to get evolved enough to not require any memorizing of code as this is what held me back the most. This UI works quite good & is easy to find ones way around.

I snagged a copy of “ubuntu-10.10-rc-desktop-i386.iso” (696 MB in size). The Dl server cranked @ almost 2.5 MB/Sec.

Very nice JD ^*^ I'm going to give it a go once it's RTM. I must say I've been quite impressed with previous editions.

What, no more -apt get? :P  I had a reason to learn the CLI(folding) so I think I learned the basics quicker than many having no idea of where to start. Also, having done DOS for 5 years in the early 80's helped, at least as to concept. I did use 10.04 for several months and liked it though I still had to install libs and all.

Thanks Graham.

On 10/10/2010 the final of Ubuntu 10.10 was released.
Last night I downloaded a copy of the x86 Desktop version.
File name: ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso

Tonight I deleted the VMware VHD, created another & installed the final version.
This install only took 17 minutes, 4 minutes faster than the RC build I installed last week.

I poked around a bit & found (1) more wallpapers on this final build, at least I didn't notice it earlier.

I'd post screenys but it appears than everything I posted earlier is the same on this one, fewer updates (10) to Dl & install after the OS install is complete anyway.
It runs quite well, I think I'll keep it ^*^

That's very soon after the RC hey! I didn't expect it for another month or so I must say. I'll download in the very near future and install as well ^*^

With open source operating systems, in the back of my head I wonder if the final is the final or will be updated again if a bug is found.
Those 10 updates Ubuntu installed, after I hit the desktop, may be some fixes or just my specific hardware add-ons, not sure.

On Sunday 10/10/2010 I checked 2 Dl sites, 1 (the ftp) was blazing fast & the other crawled & kept getting slower (slow=10KBS).
On Monday the crawling Dl site was blazing too, it appears there was a big rush of people to Dl on Sunday & the rush blu-over by late Monday.

I always go for the torrents from the official site of course.;) Maxes out my cable @ 950kB/s with 20kB/s going up. Took 13:30 to grab. I did try the regular way and it gave me some 125kB/s for a 6 hour d/l. I was watching the d/l and my speed actually got to 1012kB/s for a bit. Me thinks me ISP has upped my d/l speed from 7.1 mb/s! ^*^ It was around 800kB/s. Now to load it up in VMPlayer. :yesnod:

Yup, 17 min. from HDD ISO though it took 4 min. for the VMware tools. These are essential for transparency between Windows and Ubuntu. No need to go ctrl-alt to switch out plus one can copy between the two, I've only used it for passwords and such so far. Is the recording studio and planetarium new? Didn't notice that on 10.4 Anyways, I gave it 2 cores, 10GB of HDD space and 1GB RAM. It 'Snaps to Attention'! ^*^
